Steering Wheel Replacement

#1

I have a 91 with airbag steering wheel. I removed the airbag, which also removed my horn. I know you don’t need a horn for racing, but the rubber on the wheel was separating from the metal core and the whole thing was very heavy. Therefore, I decided to replace it with a Sparco steering wheel of the same diameter. I am using a fixed-mount Sparco hub, not a removable. I can get in and out just fine. However, the hub slides too deep on the column and I when the center nut is torqued, I have 9mm of axial play in the wheel. I measured the splines and they are indeed 9 mm shorter than stock. I ordered the next year hub and it was worse.

It looks like I need another spacer behind the wheel hub to fix this problem. Has anyone had this problem. If so, how did you fix it?

Thank you in advance

You are correct, you need a second spacer. I have the same issue with my MoMo wheel and that was the fix (I had a friend who happened to have a second spacer that we used). Unforutnately, I have no idea where he found it or how he got it. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

I had the same problem with my MOMO wheel and adapter. I ended up finding a cylindrical spacer at Lowes and sandwiching it between two washers that would fit inside the adapter and over the spline. I remember buying a lot of washers before I found the right size to fit. Good luck.

I would get a hub extender, but that is just my opinion.

Good Luck

The non airbag E30’s have a spacer on the steering wheel. If you can locate one at the junkyard, that will do the trick. If not, just throw a bunch of washers on there.
