Steering wheel removal

#1

Anyone know the torx size driver i need to remove the two rear screws on the steering wheel? And, the radio cassette screws as well?

#2

It seems like every Torx I find on BMWs is T25.

#3

I don’t remember ever using any torx on my 1987 or 1988 steering wheel.

#4

that’s cos you didn’t have an airbag

you need a T-30 torx

#5

The radio mounts need a strange 5-sided special tool. I’ve had decent luck with wedging in a similar size allen wrench, but it’s really not what they were designed for. I’m guessing it was a theft prevention/deterrent method.

For anyone looking for the DIY, here’s what I learned:

  1. The fastener is a T-25.
  2. The fasteners do not come out as you loosen them, the airbag cover comes off.
  3. You need to keep tension on the airbag cover (pulling on it) as you loosen, or the fasteners will stop rotating after you are halfway thru.
  4. Drilling out the fasteners breaks drill bits.
  5. If you don’t know about #3, then try #4, you will eventually need a pry bar and a lot of elbow grease.
  6. #3 is the easy way for removal. I’m experienced in #4 and #5.

to remove the radio head unit don’t waste you’re money on bmw tool just grind a bolt to fit. Its not much torque. If you don’t have a grinder I think you can get the radio tool for 24$ at Bavarian Autosport?
