Steering Wheel quick release

#1

What are you guys using for a quick release? I have a wheel with a momo/sparco 6-bolt pattern.

I thought about the I/O port weld on adapter with the momo adapter plate. Does that fit the E30 well?

I’d rather not weld, but I don’t want the wheel out another foot because of adapters.

Thanks! Rich.

Rich - we have the ltb motorsports quick release in both of our cars. It is a nice product/nice price. http://www.ltbmotorsports.com/ltbquicrelsp.html

The SnapOff quick release is rather nice. And because it uses tapered pins for locking it never feels loose & wobbly. See:

I have one from Bimmerworld, I believe TC Design makes it. Bolts right up to the adapter. It will only ‘lock’ on one way so it is easy to put on and off.

We have two cars and one has the snap-off and mine has the LTB. Neither are weld on and both work great!

I like the LTB one because it’s VERY solid, but the Snap-off is easier to get on the right way and straight.

I am also in need of a quick release, and am very worried about how much further towards me it moves the wheel. Any suggestions?

Brenden - unless you have unusually long arms, closer is better and less tiring especially during the longer races.

My LTB quick release just arrived today along with the MOMO steering wheel bolt on adapter. I just finished installing the whole set with the finishing touch being a new MOMO Mod 78. The LTB quick release is VERY NICE! Tight fit with zero slop or play. Definite thumbs up on this product. One of the other reasons I bought this was to bring the steering wheel out and the quick release does just that by 3 inches. Thanks Ed for heads up on this product. One last note…I did buy (and returned) the Longacre weld on…too sloppy…OK for dirt track I suppose.

Here’s a photo of my setup:

I can vouch for the LTB as well. Relatively inexpensive and pretty darn solid. I have a very minor amount of play in the wheel when you grab it on the left and right, and rock it (not turn it). It is very minor and when driving, you don’t notice it at all.

One thing I did was put a white dot of paint at the 12 o’clock position on the hub so that I can always get the wheel on straight, no matter if I parked the car straight or not.

From what I’ve heard, if you want the absolute best, buy the Sparco. But then again, look at the price.

After a long search for a weld on adapter with a momo pattern I ended up back here. Just ordered the LTB weld on. Next an NRG 2 button wheel. Hopefully the wires aren’t connected under the leather so I can use them with my IQ3.

just so you know, the LTB doesn’t have a one way pattern meaning it can be put on any way so you never know if the wheel is on straight as opposed to the sparco one that i can only put on with the wheel straight to the wheels. its thats not a big deal i love the lack of play in the LTB verses the Sparco

I went with the rogue engineering release. I love it. Using it with the Momo wheel and adapter plate. Perfect positioning. Easy release and very strong. No play at all.

Does this fit right on the steering column or does it need an adapter? I know it needs an adapter to the wheel, just curious how it fits to the column.

Just so you know, the centering problem with the LTB is solved with painting a line on the hub to adapter when straight

I don’t think there is any quick release for an e30 that doesn’t require an adapter. BMW has used a lot of different splines so it needs to say its for an E30. If I found one I would have bought it. Momo, Sparco and NRG are probably your only options for adapters. I got the LTB weld-on but it required some machining to make it work. It’s the only weld-on I could find with a 6 bolt pattern.

It needs an adapter between the steering column and the quick release but the steering wheels bolts right up to the adapter. I am running a momo adapter off of the steering column which bolts to the quick release and then the wheel bolts right to the release.
With that combo the positioning of the wheels is pushed out a bit and is perfect for me. About 5’10" and sitting in Corbeau FX1 seats on Corbeau mounts modified to fit an E30.

I’m a big fan of the Krontec QR-01. No spline to wear out, FIA approved; factory fitment to Porsche, BMW & MINI race cars. The choice of the V8 SuperCar pitlane.
