Steering Wheel Lock

#1

How did you guys disable the steering wheel lock?

#2

I took a hack saw to it.

did you just saw behind the clyinder like you would if you were removing a wheel in a junkyard?

Remove the steering wheel (key must be in turned past the lock position obviously to do this.)

Turn the key off and remove. A small square pin will pop straight up at the 12:00 position on the assembly behind the wheel.

You could saw it off as Jim suggests or use small pliers, drive out the round retaining pin which keeps the locking pin from escaping, then lift the square pin out with a pair of needle-nose.

Hacksaw method I’m sure works great too, and is probably more satisfying.

I did it as Chuck described - very easy.

#6

Wow, that was easy. Now I’m sure my wheel will not be straight though.:frowning:

Trial and error… Put it on, drive the car up and down the driveway, then re-center as needed. Repeat as needed.

That was what I tried first. But the locking bar on my 87 seemed to be attached to something within the column and would not come out. Hence the hacksaw. And yes it was very satisfying, thank you.

Used a cutting wheel to cut it off, then it popped right out.

Thanks.
