Steering column drop spacers

#1

I would like to build my spacers before I remove the tamper proof screws to lower my steering column because I will have to do the work in a friends garage with limited time.

Does anyone know the hole spacing and diameter of the 2 holes used in the spacer plates?

IIRC, the two bolts are M8x1.25. You can find suitable spacers a good hardware store.

I just used big nuts as spacers. Something like for 3/4" bolts. But this was for a non airbag model. Airbag may be different.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was planning on making some 1/8" and 1/4" aluminum bars with 2 holes in each one to use as spacers so I could have some adjustability. I should have been more clear in the first post. I may end up using a stack of washers, but I would prefer to make some spacers.

Anyone know the distance between the two bolts off the top of their head?

It’s about 2.75. Can’t remember if it’s slightly bigger or smaller. Just over size the holes a bit. If you grind the heads off versus drilling them out to save the threads, it’s an 8mm bolt.

My brother took the bolts out for me in about 5 minutes by using a hammer and chisel to unscrew them. I used two “coupler?” nuts that I drilled the threads out of. They started out about an inch long and I cut them down to .44in on the lathe.

For posterity…

I made six spacers out of 3.625"x0.75"x0.25" aluminum bar stock. I put two 0.438"diameter holes spaced out 2.875" in the bars and they worked great. I cut slots in the tamper resistant screws with a dremel cut off wheel and used an impact screwdriver to extract them. I ended up using four spacers giving me 1" drop with two M8x1.25 50mm long bolts with lock washers and everything worked out fine.
