Starter bolt

#1

Ok I spent 3 hours sunday trying to get the bolts that hold the starter out, the big discovery that the bolt is an 8mm hex-head. We did get the lower
bolt out after my friend that wants the starter came out with the 8mm hex. Now, The big question! After buying an 8mm hex socket and fiddling
around for 2 hours this afternoon, What is the trick to getting the upper starter bolt out! And to top it all off came with in 10 feet of the raccoon that
lives in the building!http://spece30.com/components/com_kunena/template/default/images/english/emoticons/w00t.png

IIRC correctly there’s a couple ways to do it.

To get more room, lift up the motor and pull out the motor mounts. Then drop the tranny support bar and drop the motor a couple inches.

If you can’t lift the motor, loosen the motor mounts and drop the tranny support bar. Then let the tranny sag a couple inches.

Finally, use a couple 6" socket extensions and a couple U Joints. Top guy shoves extension and U joint assembly past starter and past tranny such that it kinda hangs down to the bottom guy who is laying on his back under the car. Top guy puts the socket on the starter bolt. Bottom guy puts the socket wrench on the extension and U Joint assembly and turns.

A starter wrench helps with the top nut. AND while you are in there, have the starter helicoiled to get rid of the damn nuts!! Chuck

Can the nuts be tack welded in place?

Haven’t found a way to weld steel nuts to an aluminum flange:laugh: CB

Think harder. There’s a way.

The answer is JB Weld.

Craig, it is a shame to waste your commonsenseability on some e90 car in a series that we can’t, firsthand, observe your progress.

Great tip…RP

Just assume he’ll be in last place and you’ll be close to reality.

Protest!!! Has there been a ruling whether a nut with JB Weld is a “…similar item performing the same fastening function…” as a nut without JB Weld (as required under 9.3.1.8.3.)?

And technically Chuck is right since that is chemical bonding, not welding. Right?

“DeVinney,” Latin for too much time on my hands.

Hi Ranger, We did try the u joint and extension but could not get a hold on the bolt. guess we can try tip and dip this motor will be coming out soon anyway. We do have a starter wrench set.

We usually use a 2 foot extension and one u-joint with leaving motor mounts intact but remove the tranny mount so the motor tilts back to the firewall.

That is how I did it for my transmission swap.

I use a 48" extension and a wobble socket, star or otherwise…the only reasonable way to reach the bolt. CB
