Stalwart, hard luck #6 is no more.
Do you have any Traqmate data at the point of impact? Speed, G-forces, etc.? These might be interesting to see.

Mark
TM Display Unit is normally velcroed to the top of my dash. We found the Display Unit in the engine bay after the crash. Since the data file wasn’t ended correctly, the data didn’t get saved.

For g’s, figure 85mph to 0 in 18".

#22

I did the math. 85mph is ~125ft/sec. Assume d is 18".

a=V^2/2d.

a= 5194ft/sec^2. That’s about 162g’s. Dang.

#23

Wow! What a hit. Great to see you where well coming from medical. Good luck with the build.

#24

Glad you’re okay, that was a really bad one!!

Good luck finding a new donor car, I’ll keep my eyes open for you.

#25

Scott, what ever head and neck support device you were wearing needs to be checked by the manufacturer. Chuck

Re. safety recert. Roger that. I’ll be sending my belts in and replacing my HNR strap.

Here’s Fred’s photo essay on the effort to put the car on to the trailer. Nice work Fred and a second thanks to all the folks that pitched in to help.

I’ll submit the following as title’s for Fred’s photo essay:

Many hands make light work.

or

Come Along - the winches poorer cousin.

Wow, Scott hard hit. Sorry to see this. I know how it is. Good luck in getting back out there quickly. BTW Foushee is selling his car if you want a turnkey well prepped car at a reasonable price.

#29

Who has video of me crumpled into the wall?

#30

Damn dude, at least you are ok, good luck with the rebuild.

#31

Scott,

I second all the well wishes.

I watched the video a couple times and every time I just said “Wow”.

I was a couple of turns behind Scott in the race and when I passed the wreck it looked like 1/2 a car, stuck into the concrete wall, with steam coming from the front. Made me feel sick. Soon after we got the red, then double yellow, and then done.
Back in the pits, the e30 group assembled quickly to find out about Scott. Yes, we were curious about the car; the damage was huge - but encouraging, in that the driver’s space was relatively untouched. (good old e30’s!) But there was common concern and comment about Scott. It seemed like forever before he returned. There was great relief to see him striding up with a smile; the applause was spontaneous.
It could have been any of us.
In Sunday’s race, a few times I thought about the consequences of going in too hot at the top of the S’s.

Scott, we’re all ready to help you get back on track. Just ask.

How about Traqmate data from a previous race or session?

Mark

Wow Scott, hard hit. Really sorry to hear it. Like others, glad your OK. Cars can get replaced, good people can’t.

Hope you get back on the track soon.

Here’s a vid from a previous race. It has TM data feeding a dashboard for speed and g’s.

Who’s got video of me up against the wall?

I took a sawsall to the front right fender yesterday so I could take a look at the engine. Sawing a corner of a car off is non-trivial. But the hardest moment came while hunkered down in front of the bumper pulling hard on a crow bar to get a little more clearance so I could get to a bolt. I was down on my haunches pulling like a mofo when all the suddent the crow bar came free and I went sprawling backwards on my ass on to assorted tools and car shards.

It would have been funnier if my tailbone hadn’t taken such a whack.

Looking into engine bay with right front sheetmetal and suspension removed. The radiator was wrapped around the front of the engine like your hand would envelope an apple.

Looking at missing corner from front.

Looking down on engine. Note cracked aluminum cam gear cover.

Close up of passenger side of engine. Note coolant tube and bent harmonic balancer.

I’d say that there is cause for optimism that the engine survived. Both motormounts sheared but the block appears undamaged. The radiator is a big aluminum corrugate pillow that distributed the force nicely. I don’t think that anything really hard hit the engine, I think it just got pushed back by a big $350 aluminum pillow. Certainly the Jesus nut wasn’t hit that hard, it just poked thru the radiator. The hardest blow on the engine, I think was on the harmonic balancer. So the question remains…did the thrust bearing survive? Maybe when I pull the busted oil pan off I might be able to conclusively identify if the engine survived by simply measuring the play a the thrust bearing.

maybe you could do something like that french guy did with his ferrari remains:

First thing I did today while getting ready to pull my motor and trans today was almost break all the fingers in my right hand. I can’t remember if it was a moment of stupidity or if my hand slipped forward but I was taking the ramps of my trailer. They have steel triangular rungs ever couple inches and slide in from the side. I had the trailer parked to close to the fence to get them out on the side they were inserted in so I pulled the pin and pulled one back to get some momentum to slide it out the other side. With my hand on one of the rungs I flung the 30+ pound steel ramp towards the trailer. Then time seemed to stop long enough for me to think of what was about to happen and how much it would hurt. I think with some slow motion instant replay you could have seen my fingers bend back at an angle you would imagine possible without the joints all releasing completely. Thankfully I was wearing some kevlar gloves or I would have lost a lot more skin. When I pulled my glove off I had blood blisters across the top of each joint in my fingers. Most of them already torn open and bleeding. 14 hours later the status has finally upgraded from it’s probably broken to i don’t think it’s broken.

You win. Your fingers hurt worse than my ass. Our next contest is going to consist of beer, chicks, luxury and comfort. And I’m starting right now.
