Just installed my suspension and the front springs are rotating and making all sorts of popping noises when I give it a lot of steering at low speeds . I have the CG Camber plates and was wondering if anyone else had this problem?
Springs rotating
Could it be that the upper end of the springs are rubbing against the shock tower? There’s enough range in te GC plates to allow the springs to rub the tower. I don’t know what would happen if that much camber was dialed in, but I can’t imagine it being a good thing.
Are the springs rotating when you have the car jacked up? If so, that is normal because the springs are too short for the droop of the shock. Does the popping sound go away after a few turns? If so, then the springs are just reseating themselves in the pockets of the strut. Otherwise, you might check to see if the strut is actually tight in the upper bearing. If you hear a popping noise coming from the camber plates when you bounce the car up and down, then the bearing is loose in the camber plate. I had that problem in one of my camber plates and needed to shim it.
I’ve got the IE camber plates and when I turn hard left at really low speed, the right side thumps. Al Taylor, seer of all things bad in an E30, told me not to worry about it. Then again, he admitted that this is a detail-oriented series and he’s not a details kind of guy…

The car is on the ground when this is happening it just sounds like the spring is trying to reseat itself but it doesn’t go away after a couple of turns. I’ll check to see if the bearing in the camber plate is loose by bouncing the car.

I pushed down on the car by each of the struts and it was solid with no noises. When I am driving and I make a hard turn and then straighten the wheel the car still wants to pull in that same direction. I don’t know if the springs are winding up and getting stuck or something???
Did you get the washers back in the top of the strut in the right order?
I missed that once and it caused stiffness in the steering.
i had the same noise and it ended up being a spanner nut on the bottom of the shock at the passenger front coming loose.

After reading all of the posts on the GC plates, I didn’t install the washer on the camber plate. The order I have the strut assembly is: Strut, spring, spring hat, camber plate, nut. Is there something I missed?
It has been a while, but I think there is supposed to be a washer in there…at least stock. I have NEVER used GC plates though…
It will not turn without the WASHER. Spring hat, washer, then camber plate. Ask me how I know. Ask Carter how he knows. Regards, Robert Patton
yes on #8 (an with IE plates you might have to use supplied washers in addition as well).
How about #4 washer on top of camber plate bearing?

im messing w/ this crap right now as we speak. i havent been happy w/ these plates since installed them, popping allover, goofy steering, etc.
i have the car up on stands so there is no load on the spring hats. on one side as long as the strut nut is no more than snug, it rotates freely.
however on the other side i swear the spring hat is binding against the back of the bolts that are welded to the ring and go through the strut tower.
i didnt use any washers (if i remember correctly) because the other thread said not to.
gahh. i guess i’ll have to take it apart and see how it goes w/ the washer.
well i took it apart and it turns out that the bearing were so stiff and the spring hats were so soft that they bent. i hammered em flat again, used the stock washer above the spring hat which i now see is to reinforce the hat, and now all is great!
so far so good at least. not a pop, tick, or thunk on my test drive.
