spring perch repair, kosher?

So I have a damaged strut tube, driver side about 2-2.5* out, as a result of a light collision with a wall. I bought a set of used ones from a fellow on r3vLimited; they finally arrived yesterday. To my surprise when I opened the box the one I need has some ham-handed damage.

Looks like someone was going to make coil overs and then stopped. The seller apologized and said his little brother must have shipped the wrong ones and he would make it right. Fair enough.

I am fairly handy with my Mig welder, can I just fill the cuts with a bead and call it a day or is this an unreasonable safety hazard?

Thanks,

Miguel

I’d ignore the cuts at the top of the hat. They aren’t going to make a difference in how the spring sits in the hat, and not much difference in strength. It’s hard to to tell how bad the cuts are down below near the top of the tube. If they’re kinda deep, you might want to weld those. .

Thanks for the reply. Which are the cuts your worried about? There is some scratching on the tubes themselves, are those the lower ones you are referring too? Those are just scratches/scuffing marks.

The ones I was asking about is the pair on the spring perch base. The second picture is of the same cuts just from the side to show their depth. Looks like they were made with a cut off wheel. Seems that is a high stress area; load from springs get transferred via that seat.

Filling them is easy enough. If you think they will be just as strong I can save the kid an extra 30$ in shipping.
