Spec exhaust installation question.

#1

I am preparing to install the spec exhaust on my brothers car and am wondering about where the stock exhaust ends and the spec one starts. I can’t remember off hand if the stock down tubes have flanges on them or not. If so I guess you simply cut them off(?) Do the stock tubes slide into the spec tubes at the Y? Also, I need a stock down tube(s) if anyone has extra.

No flanges, cut before ‘H’ pipe.

Yes. Clean off any burrs, should slide on. If your stock down tubes have any scrapes, you may need to ‘adjust’ the tubes to make them fit.

My exhaust arrived with big holes in the box so I can’t be sure that I have all the parts. My old exhaust had a fastening point on the transmission housing. In contrast, the spec exhaust did not seem to come with hardware to fasten to the tranny. What am I missing?

Scott - it mounts to the downpipes and then has two hangers at the other end of the car.

In my first install (getting the idea from Dr. E30 Robert Patton), had nice metal strapping to help support the exhaust.

It ripped off just like everything else on the trailer. But I’d still suggest it.

Go to Home Depot and buy metal strapping used for plumbing or air duct mounting.

Cut off lengths and use it to ‘shore’ up trouble points like the transmission bracket.

Won’t save the day, but will help a little bit.

Jim, thanks for the credit.

The straps keep the exhaust from dragging on the track when the muffler brackets break or the exhaust system comes off of the hangers.

The straps also keep the black flag in the unfirled position.
