Spec E30 for 2011/New drivers

#1

Dexter Owen mentioned in another post about “10 spec e30 southeast wannabes” that are looking at 2011 HPDE events and Racing.

Give us your stories and updates…

Thanks in advance
RP (the first spec e30 guy…think 2004…think "I better race better than -fill in the blank- if I’d been out there 6 years).

I am hoping to attend comp school towards the end of next season. I am doing RA next month which will make my 6th NASA weekend this year. After speaking with you last weekend, I plan to attend as many BMWCCA events as I can next year to receive more instruction along with attending some NASA DE3 events to get passing and driving off line experience.

Well thanks for asking…:cheer:

Just finished the 4th weekend in the new build. Silver / Silver #62.

Moving up to DE 3 for the next event to start learning about and getting more comfortable with traffic.

2nd year track diver coming from a street Miata for learning purposes.

Got some additional work to do on the car, fire system, nets, suit, setup, weight etc. Will probably look for a comp school mid to late next year when I have some DE 3 time under my belt.

In no rush but looking forward to the racing aspect. Want to go out there and at least be comfortable, even slightly competative. No desire to be a speed bump or a danger to anyone.

Grabbing as much seat time as I can right now and starting to get to know some of the faces on here…

Any comments on the posted video’s would always be appreciated…Spend quite allot of time watching video’s posted here, reading these and other forums…

Always eager to learn…So don’t hesitate to pass along info to me…

Link to some build pictures ( I think )

Jon, others, DeVinney is the video guru. They all look the same to me…The “line” is usually the line. The only catch is that those that are in the front do the line faster. Don’t ask me how, but they do.

Meanwhile, back in the pack, I can make you 2 secomds per lap faster than you currently are right now. It takes only one short weekend to gain the 2 seconds, And, even then, you’ll still not be at the pace of the front runners (unless you’ve got the Schwartz, Skeen, Levine, Tower, Devinney, McKay, Palacio, etc., levels of talent). Then there is racecraft…I’ve got bunches of that, but no talent.

Put a race number on the side doors. Come join us-- improve your game, learn some racecraft…

After a few TTs this year, I’m looking forward to comp school in March, I think…, but still need at least a towhook, fire extinguisher, new belts, suit, hans, and inspections. I will take you up on that 2 second offer, Robert, but I could use 3, or more…

I’m in DE3 now, and hopefully will be ready for comp school by next fall. It will take that long because I still have a lot of work left to do on my car. I may have the car drivable enough for DE at Road Atlanta in December… we’ll see.

Speaking of Comp School…Is the information posted about "what it is / what you do " anywhere?

Haven’t found any info to date…

What it is. Depending on the weekend it’s either a Friday format or a Sat-Sun format. It’s alternating classroom sessions to talk about what to do, and not do, and on-track drills. The drills are to make you more comfortable with other cars in close proximity, and with non-optimal lines. There’ll be lots of practice starts and going thru turns 2 wide. Finally there will be a practice race.

What you do. When you feel you are ready for Comp School you ask Jim Pantas if he agrees. You car has to meet all safety regs of a fully prepped car. So it doesn’t need to be ready for it’s class, but it needs it’s cage, nets, seat, harness, etc.

Graduation rate at a recent mid-atl comp school was only 50%. You need to be safe and predictable. A great skill builder for comp school is slicing and dicing with similar cars during open passing track sessions.

Thanks Ranger…

I’m one of those that’s shooting for comp school early 2011. Probably March at Road Atlanta.

Background: My first time in a Spec E30 was in the fall of 2007 when I went out to Thunderhill in NorCal to run my first DE1 in my dad’s Vette. The last session on Sunday I got a chance to drive the spec car. I picked up my '87 about the same time, built a very nice daily driver with all Spec suspension and drove 3 weekends in '08 before wrecking it at Road Atlanta in December. All of 2009 was spent rebuilding the car, prepping and installing a full cage. This year I’ve made it to 5 track events so far and have been running DE4. My brother also runs the car and is currently in DE2.

I’m looking forward to getting out there for some actual racing.

See you guys next month at RA.

Matt

Matt,

RA in December 08 was a terrible waeekend for you and Steven… I’m glad to hear you have your car back in order.

#12

You can count me out for a while. This weekend I got some new issues that I don’t want to talk about. By a while I mean possibly a year and a half.

Yeah it was. I’m sure U-Haul didn’t plan to have their same trailer used to bring home two wrecked cars from the track in the same day. I felt a little bad that I was telling Steven earlier that weekend that he should stop tracking the MazdaSpeed6 and trade to an E30 so that it wouldn’t be as much of a problem if he wrecked it. Hopefully it wasn’t a jinx. Oh well, it worked out just fine for both of us.

In two years I have done 4 or 5 events in HPDE. My goal is to do at least 7 with NASA in 2011, half of that in HPDE3/4. 2012 should be my bust out year with the car (Miss Prissy) completed and the driver in spiffy gear. Just being realistic on the time line.

#16

My car should be ready to pick up in January and I might be ready for competition come Road Atlanta in March. Really just comes down to my finances to finish the car and my ability to get the time off to come down and play.

Right. When you guys come race with us remember that quote (as the Taxi disappears ahead of you into the distance…)

If I had a nickel for every time some poor bastard got a car stripped and partially caged, I could strip and partially cage a car.

But you’re right, Mikey. In those photos you can barely tell that the door bars are made out of exhaust tubing.

PS - Do you really think a plastic bumper car is the right move considering how much abuse the rear one will get when the field laps you?

Wow, not 1, not 2, but 3 good swift kicks to the nuts.
You know what that is like don’t you? Kinda like how you felt after you got spanked Saturday by not only Johan but Eric and Warren too. If 2nd place is the first loser, what does that make you?
