Source for Sheet Plastic / Aluminum?

#1

Anyone have a line on where to get a couple of 4x8 sheets of ¼ acrylic plastic or sheet aluminum (for making interior door panels)?

I’ve looked around on the web, but between shipping and minimum orders, the ones I’ve found are outrageously expensive and the local sign shops don’t seem interested in returning phone calls.

4x8 sheets usually mean truck freight so costs are high unless you buy large quantities. I use McMaster and US Plastic for most of my plastics needs. Yarde Metals and McMaster meet most of my metals needs. Try Thomas Register to find local distributors if shipping is an issue. I found a local place through Thomas when I needed a small bar of a specific grade black delrin for a job after an minor face mill accident in the CNC (taught me to double check feed speeds before a manual jog).

Dan,

I bought a 4x8 sheet of 1/8 inch ABS black plastic from Piedmont plastics in Raleigh. It cost just under $70 and is more than enough to do two door panels. Actually I still have half a sheet of it if you want it real cheap. Let me know. Or I can give you directions to Piedmont.

I’ve bought a few items at Raleigh Sheet Metal. They might have some scrap lying around.

See if there is a Metal Supermarket near you. They buy usable scrap from local businesses so the prices are attractive and the quality of the stuff is good.

Ken,

I’ve only got one door to do so I want that piece if Dan does not.

No problem, I’ll let you know.

Steven, go ahead and get the one from Ken – I need at least two sheets (one for doors, and one for a splitter), so I’ll be going by Piedmont.

Thanks guys! (Much more useful than the google results.)

Dan,

Glad to help! When you say splitter do you mean an underpanel behind the lower front spoiler? If so you might want to check the rules, I don’t think we can do anything for aerodynamics to the underside of the car. Or maybe I misunderstood the rules or you or both.

Ken,

I’m going to be coming through Raleigh on Monday 8/14 in the afternoon.
Any chance we can meet then for me to pick it up?

thanks,
Steven

I’ll be around on Aug 14. Just call me on your way to Raleigh and we can work out the details.

Dan,

If you’re still interested in Aluminum, there’s a recycling shop out cheek road. If you take 70 and exit at Cheek, it’s within a couple of miles on the left as you head out of Durham. They sell stuff by the pound and it’s cheap. I bought some sheet aluminum to fill in variouis dash voids and make some other stuff and I think it cost me $2.00.

I would copy the text of the clauses, but the rules PDF now restricts the ability to select and copy text…

9.3.13.3 Says that splitters are permitted, so long as they do not extend more than 2 inches beyond the bodywork (i.e. the front of the spoiler lip).

9.3.13.5 Says that you’re not allowed to modify the underside of the vehicle to improve aerodynamics.

I take these two rules, in light of the fact that the original bodywork included plastic panels that went from the bottom of the spoiler to the plastic inner wheel well liners, to say that you can add a splitter so long as it doesn’t extend backwards beyond the original under tray, and that you cannot add a venturi or smooth out the structures under the chassis.

What I’m planning on making is very similar to what’s seen here: http://ryan.tobinhosting.com/album/eS-iS-Early-Style-Splitters/aah.sized.jpg If it’s deemed illegal, I’ll just make sure that I can remove it at the track relatively quickly and easily.

It looks like you’ve put a lot of consideration into the rules and your probably OK. I just didn’t want you to do anything that was deemed illegal and get anyone worked up about it. Let me know how it works out.
