So now what?

No smack talk until Feb? This is going to be a grim couple of months with no racing to occupy my every waking moment.

So to stay busy contemplating painting the car. I’ve gotten advice from Patton (tedious, time consuming, won’t do it again) to Skeen (not bad, easy, no problem). EDIT ** Skeen didn’t say it was easy, my interpretation

Any others care to weigh in with their winter project or painting experiences?

I know JP is working on his turbo build, any others?

I don’t think I ever said it was easy. That said, I would probably do it again. Difficulty is proportional to your expectations, what you start with, and what paint scheme you’re looking for.

Bodywork is the worst part if you want it really right. If your car is pretty straight or you don’t care, then that saves a lot of time/effort. Number of colors/design will determine a lot of things as well.

Where you paint will also determine how much work you do. If you paint in your garage, you spend half a day covering it in plastic. If you paint outside, you pretty much cover everything in overspray. If you can borrow someone’s paint booth on a weekend, you’re golden.

Skeen said it, I didn’t, "difficulty is porportioal to your expectations."

That about sums it up.

Just remember, it is gonna get scratched and bumped somewhere down the line.

I think I would build another car before I did a paint job again. But, it is a great learning experience.

My expectations (as always) are proportional to my abilities so poor / low.

So does this mean you’re going to build another car Patton?

What mysteries are being solved in Geno’s garage this winter?

#5

Jim, no racecars this winter. I think I’ll rebuild a 3.0CS with the drivetrain out of a '88 M5.

I would say the the outcome is directly porportional to the time you have to commit to the prep and paint work. Me, I have zero time and would absolutely not consider taking on this project myself.

Has anyone looked at my paint job? It’s a $400 Maaco job that looks really good. I figure I saved at least $1000 in my time by paying Maaco to do it.

The Maaco paint job is the best idea I’ve heard yet. My clearcoat is flaking off like a bad sunburn. I was trying to figure out how to salvage it. I’d probaly spend $400 in materials trying to redo myself.

John, your car doesn’t need paint, it will be fine. Trust me, your car is nicer now than any current race car in the SE started. It will look great with a wet sand and clearcoat.

I will be doing the following in the off season:

  1. Getting the interior and cage painted

  2. Putting on a new exhaust

  3. Maybe swapping out my leaky transmission

  4. Reading/studying as many driving books as possible with the hope that I will be more competitive next year

Macco is the way to go for anything larger than a spoiler. Ask me how I know :frowning:

Which speaking of… here’s my winter project. I love eBay!

I admit that I have been bitten by the E30 bug… Pete & I are building two(2) more cars: Snoopy & The Red Baron B)

We painted the "Panther" in my driveway but it shows… $38 for a gallon of "truck fleet paint" and about $20 in masking tape!

Pepto-Bismol! :silly:

The paint is designed to be cheap and cover everything in one coat - you can get any color you want, I found out about it when I went to paint the WHR 4 car enclosed hauler.
