Folks behind me (a small group, sadly) say my new motor puffs blue smoke while I’m turning. What might be causing that?
Smoke from engine at turn exit
As I told you on Sunday, your engine is burning oil.
I watched the Sunday race from the sidelines and I could see good amount of smoke when you were downshifting going into turns and adding gas coming out of turns (especially T11 and T14).
With my limited mechanical knowledge, I am guessing it may be the valves or the rings.

A puff of blue smoke when you let off throttle, then get back on is almost always valve seals. Remember that this motor has been sitting on the floor in Bobby’s shop for a couple years. I would change the oil to regular 20w50 castrol, and drive it. Hopefully the seals will liven back up.
Or bolt your newly refurbed head on!!
Scott: Having read the many trials and tribulations of your vehicle, my advice is as follows:
- Drink Heavily
- Fire your mechanic, replace with exorcist
and - Supplant advice found on SE30 message board with the battle-tested genius of Ouija Board.
I’d guess on valve seals from what I saw (and I had a good vantage point). It smoked only after a trailing throttle and that usually means seals. As pointed out above, they may just be dry and will swell up some and stop the smoke.
BTW Scott, the whole front of my car has a light film of oil on it. So there’s a good bit of oil being lost.
Scott,
I’m going to put together a video of the 2.5 minutes I was behind you so you can see the smoke. I missed a shift in 14 and Jim got between us so that’s all I have.
