Simple oil filter question

I rotated my oil filter housing 180 degrees to better route the oil cooler lines with an aftermarket cooler. In this position, the filter sits closer to the CPS mounting bracket than I like. Is there any reason I couldn’t use the E30 M3 oil filter? It appears to be exactly the same as the M20 filter, just a little shorter.

If it threads on ok and the outside dia is the same it shouldn’t matter. I use an oil filter for the Audi TT, you can mix and match filters to some degree.
