I may have found the car I am looking for finally but it is in San Francisco and I’m in Socal. Rather than drive up to find out its not in good shape I want to send it to a shop to look it over for me. Where should I send it? Also, other than rust what should I have looked for? Do you think I should have a compression test run? Thanks guys.
Shop in SF area?
A good BMW shop will know what to look for. And yes, a leakdown test is always good.
Unless you have told the owner that the car is going to the track, you might be able to negotiate if the A/C doesn’t work, or the dash is cracked, or the interior is very worn, or the paint is faded.
Good luck.

Email Mike Mills - he’s president of the Golden Gate chapter of the BMWCCA, and our resident webmaster here at SpecE30.com. He should know of a couple of decent shops.

Hi Nino,
I agree that e-mailing Mike Mills is a good idea. Depending on where the car is, there are several places that will do a good job checking out the car for you. My mechanic is Bavarian Professionals in Berkeley. They’ve done several pre-purchase inspections for me and are excellent. Their info is at http://www.bavpros.com. You can ask for Nat or Michael and tell them I sent you.
Good luck,
