Well shit! You didn’t say anything about it having an out-of-print Beertech sticker on it. That’s a collector’s item now.

Off topic here…

Has anyone done any testing to confirm we actually benefit from these strut braces?

#11

It would take some instrumentation and a data logger to prove that a front strut brace is needed or not needed. That said, since any movement of the front strut towers will affect front wheel alignment, a strut brace seems like a good idea.

The main benefit of the strut tower brace is to prevent cracking of the strut towers from the frame. I doubt there is any benefit to handling until one of your towers cracks along the weld.

#13

Good lord, this has happened?

Anyone have pics of this?

That is reason enough.

I read this was a common problem area in e30s used for autox and racing years ago. That is why I finally bought one. I can’t find any specific stories or pictures from people who have experienced this. I just found a lot of articles saying they will crack if you don’t get a brace. There were pictures of z3s, e36 and e46s with cracked towers. Apparently it is a common BMW problem.

Yeah, really stiff spring rates and years and years of autcrossing and track events take their toll on cars… Our old E30 M3 had a few stress cracks in the A pillars and the subframes (both ends) needed reinforcement over the years… But that car was ridden hard and put away wet in Chicago for maybe 88-2000 (we owned it 94-2000)… In fact it was run in the Seattle area through 2006 when some asshat finally killed it in a traffic accident. Apparently the guy who invented Pro3 (E30 racing) bought it and is turning it into a Group N spec car :p.

So despite all the punishment, they do survive to fight again.

My old Rx7 ITA car in fact ended up with one corner slightly higher than the rest - LF - due to all the right handers at Blackhawk :stuck_out_tongue:
