Savanah Sizzler @ Roebling Road

#1

I saw this in the newsletter from Jim today:
Savannah is a gorgeous city and we always enjoy the fun and racing at Roebling Road. We will be back on Labor Day weekend. What a great way to get some track time and spend the holiday on Monday at the beach with the family…

We are also bringing back the Blitz racing group - it is promising to be a great new feature at NASA-SE events! Sign up today! All participants at the Savannah Sizzler can pick up a $50 off coupon after lunch on Sunday! Sign up soon as the event is filling up!
I’m surprised to see the Blitz run group coming back at an event with so few people who attend. Looks like it is us and GTS1&2. Only 4 signed up since it looks like Evan isn’t coming. Anyone else planning on showing up?

Patton, Patton and Taylor will be there. Kelly C is a maybe.

Wish I could, but my car is sick! and my friends seem to think September is a good month for getting married

#4

Whats wrong with your car?

And there isn’t a good month for the tightening of the knot / noose.

Old Reliable engine #1 is severely down on power!! I had my suspicions after RA in June but VIR last month confirmed it for me. I am way overdue for a basic tune up though so I’m gonna throw some parts at it and hit the dyno.

I also got really wide coming out of oak tree on the last lap of the Sunday race, past the dirt into the grass wide. Out in that grass there are large ruts. The car now has some weird noises coming from the rear. I haven’t investigated it yet.

Nothing a little duct tape and zip ties can’t fix!!

Our guestroom is available. We’re 25min from RR.

Signed up today! I’m baaaaack!

Maybe it is just me but I think Steve D needs to back out of the race in Savannah. I would need to win both races at CMP and Road Atlanta along with Steve finishing in 3rd for two of the races for me to win the championship. Instead of it being a race to finish looks like he is going to clinch the championship this weekend. I guess it will be a fight for second.

Congrats Steve on the win!

Your recap of what has to happen for you to win sounds way too plausible. I think I’ll go to Savannah. I want a front row seat to watch Damion and Johan duke it out.

I have way too much rust on me to run up front with you and Johan! Maybe by December if I am lucky.

Wish I could make it… but we have a large family reunion that weekend. If I hadn’t missed RATL earlier this year and was still in the points hunt I would make a larger effort, but since we get no drops this season, have fun!

I’ll see you all at CMP.

Have a great time at RR! I have family commitments here at home for the weekend; so can’t make it this time.

WTG Ludo on the pics.

For those of you that weren’t at RR this weekend, Ludo is a Savannah based guy that is on loan from France for the next 3-4yrs. He’s a very experienced DE guy, in France, and we’re having some success convincing him to jump into SpecE30.

This was by far the smallest race of the year. Just you wait until the Oct and Dec races.

Ok, my report.

Well, I had a pretty good weekend. Incredibly, we found that most of my 5-6krpm/WOT engine problems went away if I disconnected the TPS. The downside of that was that with no TPS the engine doesn’t know the pedal is at WOT so you don’t get (I think) as much ignition advance and the engine uses internal maps. After fooling with it a bit Sat morning the CEL came on and we never did beat that, so I raced with no TPS and with a CEL. And the engine did better than it has since Feb.

I swear, the more I do this the less I know.

I did not get a clean lap at Qual Saturday and ended up 10th of 11. I had great fights in the race with Chuck Taylor among others, and finished 4th. That’s the best I’ve done all year. Not having reviewed my video yet, the thing that sticks in my memory is a helova fight Chuck and I had with a 911 GTS3 car that just wouldn’t get out of our way. It was a helova lot faster in the straights but a dog in the twisty parts. Chuck and I were on him like stink for several laps. Chuck’s tires were going and he was spending a lot of time sideways, while simultaneously beside the 911. I was trying to figure out which way Chuck was going to lose it, what the 911 was going to do (other than wet himself) when Chuck started spinning along side of him, and where the hole was going to be for me to squirt thru.

Lako was just ahead of the 911 thru all this. Then Lako lost it in 5, the 911 wet himself and Chuck and I bolted past the 911. I didn’t get by Lako until turn 1 tho. It was a fine outside pass, if I do say so myself.

It was really a lot of fun. Even if I did yell at the 911 a lot.

This was my 4th weekend on my tires. I would learn that tires are good for 3 1/2 weekends.

Today I got clear track for qual, got a good time and found that because everyone else upped their game it was only good enough for 7th.

Jim let us do a standing start. It was pretty cool, even if it nothing interesting really came out of it. For me anyways. Chris Tuttle yanked his shift knob off going for 2nd and I think he was feeling around the floor board for it when he get rear ended to add to his misery.

I was doing fine keeping Chuck behind me and hanging with Laura trying to make something work until about 4laps to go. Then my tires really fell off and suddenly I was in a crisis. I drove just as fast as I possibly could trying to put down fast laps so Chuck and Damion wouldn’t close with me, but I just didn’t have the grip. I think it was some of the best driving I ever did where I was controlled slides both early and late in the turns, catching the rear end repeatedly as it tried to step out, but in the end it just was not enough and Damion and Chuck got by me with 2 laps to spare.

In the desparate effort to push what tires I had as fast as they would possibly go, I slipped off the track at both the turn-in for 2 and also the turn-in for 5b. I stayed in it, caught both of those and gathered it together. It didn’t all go my way, but I did good work with what I had.

First, congratulations to Kelly on two podiums (3rd/2nd) and what I think is his first SpecE30 pole! Hell of a weekend Mr Childress. May well have won the Sunday race if not for a bit of John Deere action while allowing a faster GTS car to play through. Glad to see you finally get your car issues sorted after all this time!

DeVinney seems to be a fast learner. Mr “I’ve never raced here before” ended up sweeping the weekend. Give 'em hell at Nationals, Steve!

My report is equal parts frustration and fun. Car was evil-handling all weekend. Big-time push in every session until Sunday race when it developed a wicked loose rear end. Also managed to blister a tire with only 3 track days on it. Bummer.

Anyway, Saturday started 9th and had some fun battles and was holding down 4th near the end when the car started cutting out in T9. Not enough fuel – argh! Obviously should have known better. Cost me a bunch of positions at the end.

Sunday, started 8th, finished 6th. Fun battle with Gress. Finished it with an outside pass on T5. Scott, I didn’t realize until I looked at the tape that Damion made it through at same time. Double-suck for you!

Damion made his return to SE30 action a much more eventful weekend than he’d planned. In the first couple laps of Saturday practice something big broke in his RF brakes or suspension causing the destruction of basically everything on that corner – shock insert, control arm, caliper/bracket, rotor, brake line, etc. Bunch of parts-bin contributions and replacement with an OEM shock (how was that Gabriel double-action there, Damion?) but he made the show on Saturday with minutes to spare. Huge thumbs-up to Scott (Lako/Walsh’s chief mechanic) who jumped in and handled the heavy work. Glad to see Damion back out there.

Looks like the sharp end of the field is going to have two additional guys to worry about – Childress/Moses.

Chris Tuttle and Scott Gress, if you like pictures of your rear bumper, these are for you.

PS - Damion, please post a picture of what’s left of the wheel. So little material left it looks like the crappy plastic wheel covers they sell at Wally-Mart!

As chuck mentioned my return did go as expected. About third lap into the opening practice session I was heading doen the fron straight full bore and when I went to the brake pedal there was a loud bang and no brakes. I looked where i wanted to go and was able to control the car all the way around to turn in the grass. Pretty scary moment. Once we got the car back to the paddock we could see the the brake caliper had come loose and had taken everything on that corner of the car. It was crazy.

At this point the spec e30 community showed its tru colors. Everyone started rounding up parts to get my car back together. Robert with a control arm and other misc. bits, Eric Nissen with a brake caliper, chuck with some pads and extra fluid etc. It was incredible the way they sprung into action. The only thing that was missing was shock insert. I would have to settle for a Gabriel OEM style replacement to get me through the weekend.

Of all the help I recieved Scott from Walsh/Lako was a true life saver. He jumped in with both feet and did all the heavy lifting to get me back out there. I even learned a few tricks of the trade along the way. Scott thrashed away on the car and I just made the grid for the race starting dead last of course. Needless to say the car was a handful with the gabriel shock on the front. It was most definelty a three legged dog but I was glad to be out there. During the race I also had another problem manifet in the form a leaking clutch master cylinder. The clutch was slipping the entire race and my foot was a well since it was covered in the leaking fluid. I picked up a couple of spots and I still felt really rusty from the long layoff but it was great to just be out there.

On Sunday more drama as the clutch master cyclinder (That Devinney provided, THANKS)) change was a little more involved than I thougt but once again the Backyard Batman Scott came to my rescue. We got the car fixed and I went out for qualifying but ended up dead last again I was really taking it easy figuring out all the cars quirks from the weekend.

I got a good dtanding start and got 2 0r 3 on the start. I set off after Laura after that and eventually got by. Gress and Chuck were the next two I was hoping to catch. I pretty much followed Chuck through when he made a pass on Gress who fighting a pushing car. On the last lap I tried to make a move on Chuck going into 5 and almost pulled it off but thought it better I back off. Sunday made all the drama worth it as I really feel like I drove as well as I could with what I had. I knocked a little of the rust off but still have a ways to go!

Thanks again to everyone that contributed parts, time, experience, and moral support to get me back out there!

Thanks Chuck for the kind words. It was definitely a weekend of new experiences for me. The car ran great all weekend and I ended up qualifying 5th on Saturday. The race went well as I focussed on minimizing mistakes and ended up taking advantage mistakes made by others. I had a great view of the front runners especially as we got bottled up behind GTS traffic. There were times I was amazed we didn’t end up with 4 wadded up E30’s behind them. With a few laps to go I found myself in 3rd place behind Robert. Wanted to try to see if we could catch SteveD, but ran out of time. Video below

Sunday, I positioned to qualify well chasing SteveD in a group with Robert P. I was probably the most surprised to hear I was on the pole by a tenth of a second. Im pretty sure it was a bump draft from Robert that gave me the edge. Sunday’s race was a standing start, so most everyone who knew me questioned the logic behind putting someone with a history of clutch issues at the front of a standing start. While Lako got a good jump behind me, I was able to hold the lead into turn one. With everyone behind me battling each other I was able to build a nice gap for the first half of the race. Once SteveD cleared everyone else he started slowly gaining on me. As Chuck eluded to, I screwed up in traffic and lost the lead as a result. In the end, I wasn’t able to make up for the mistake finished second. Video to follow:

Here is a copy of the highlights with the standing start from in car, from the paddock, and my off track excursion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVAQwnMtBs4

Definitely looking forward to CMP & IFU5!

Congrats to Devinney and Kelly for great drives. Great weekend of specE30 thrashing on and off track. Ill pass on the kind words to Scott for his work on Damions car.
Saturday: qualified 6th and finished 5th. I corded 3 tires and really made a mistake on running old rubber, sliding off track in 2 and later in 5 losing positions both times only to regain some through Johans motor misfortune and Chucks lack of fuel.
Sunday: New rubber helped qualified 3rd and finished 3rd. Video to follow: http://vimeo.com/28854799

Thanks to Scott for helping me prepare the car last week and coming down to Savannah on a holiday weekend. Good luck to Devinney at Nationals.

I have to say as an outsider, the “camaraderie” (managed to use a french word lol) was great to see and plays a big part in me wanting to join in the fun. good laugh in the paddocks, nice clean racing on track, not a bad way to spend a weekend I think
