SAFETY/wheels

#1

Yo

While flipping my tires today I noticed something strange on one of my BBS wheels, it has some electrolitic corrosion on the lip to the point that the lip looks like it is about to crumble…after looking at the wheel more I noticed a weld in the center…maybe when they were welding on it they clamped the ground on the lip? it is just really strange looking and it kind of scares me that I just ran that wheel on the banking at Rockingham.

I think NEW wheels are a good idea, not just from a performance standpoint but also a matter of safety. Most of us do not get a chance to really inspect our wheels as the local tire jockey’s do the mounting. Even if the "NEW" bottlecap you just bought off EBAY spent it’s life in the trunk, if it was exposed to moisture it can corrode. Check you wheels after every weekend, cracks can develop around the lug holes, where the center meets the rim etc. I know I have seen a lot of wheel failures on the track…

AND make sure you buy wheels that are REAL racing wheels, there is a lot of crap out there these days, also inspect new wheels for casting flaws, cracks etc. I was in an insurance warehouse the other day and there was a very popular spec e30 wheel there that had bad casting flaws…
