Rotor wear question..Is it time to change

#1

My rotors are not terribly worn yet, but all over the surface there are what seems to be thousands of very small surface cracks. None are deep, or tie together, they just cover the surface of the rotor. I didn’t measure, but I’d be surprised if the largest is 1/8" long, maybe 3/16".

Is this normal from heat, or is it time to chuck them and replace the set?

I think what you are seeing is quite normal for a track car. That being said, I prefer to play it safe and replace rotors when they look like that.

I ordered a set of fronts from Autoparts123.com this morning for $52 shipped. I believe that’s higher than the smoking deal Chi usually gets, but good enough for me.

Once the rotors reach the cracking point, I could run them longer but I don’t think it is worth the risk to get the last $20 worth of life out of them. Plus they probably eat $10 more pad material due to the cracks… Splurge on that net $10 it costs you.

I’ve got a whole new set of rotors from autoparts123 also, just haven’t put them on yet. I guess I’ll do it before Barber if I get the rest of the stuff done. If not at home then at the track.

Different racers have different comfort levels in when they replace the cracked-out rotors. Come on by and I’ll show you some crackitude.

That’s what happens to rotors of a track or race car. In most cases if the rotor is going to really crack it will do so as it cools down after a session. The surface cracks that you see are a precursor to real crack. You can proactively change the rotors or just check for real cracks before qualifying or a race. Just check them when you’ll have enough time to change the rotors befor you really need them.

The rule of thumb that I was told is that you replace the rotor when you can catch a fingernail in a crack. Any crack that you can’t catch a nail in can be ignored.
