Roll Cage Design

#1

I am in the design stages of my roll cage and I wonder if anyone has any AutoCad drawings of the front/top/side profiles of the e30? I would like to layout the various aspects of the cage before doing any cutting and bending. I know there are endless variations on the basic NASA mandated design and I would like to model different ones.

Autocad? Wow, we are getting very professional now.
I just used pics from other members/racers/forums, and a saw pro cars in person, and telling my cage builder what I want/can afford.

Well, a buddy of mine at work is going to help me build it (he is the pro cage builder, I am the flunkie) and I thought it would speed things up if I already had the tubing pieces planned out before he got my car. It may be a waste of time, but I can do AutoCad despite the fact that I can’t weld.

CAD!!! I feel like Jethro Bodine… I have always bent mine out of electrical conduit and used that as the template. $2.50 for a 10 foot stick plus $6.00 for the bender.

This way I also get an accurate estimate for the tubing order.

FYI if anyone is interested 1.75 X .095 DOM is $3.40 foot in Upstate NY. I just finished building a hydraulic bender. Pro Tools in Florida was very helpful with plans and parts for the bender.

FWIW I paid $3.80 in SE PA a few weeks ago.

I guess I am too anal about the whole thing. The conduit idea is good, better than cardboard templates.

BTW, is 1-3/4" x .120" tubing legal? That is the size one of my local suppliers keeps in stock.

Yes, but HEAVY!!

Check out http://www.ptcalliance.com/dom/swpf.asp

1.75X.095 = 1.679 #/ft
1.75X.120 = 2.089 #/ft

Say 100’ for a cage that is an extra 41#'s up high

DUH! I don’t know why that obvious fact escaped me.

My steel supplier doesn’t keep .095 in stock - they had to order it - two day wait. Just ask and they will be able to get it for you.
