I had a very exciting race where I fought tooth and nail to hold my position. I’d qualified 6th on stickers but was racing on old tires. I’d intended to let the stickers rest overnight and race them on Sun. I’d qualified shockingly well on Saturday with a personal best time even tho I never got a clear lap and felt clumsy and imprecise behind the wheel. Saturday afternoon I was determined to hold my surprising qual position even tho I was swapping to old tires.

It was to be a relatively short race. A TR spun in 4 and ended up astrid the track. The flaggers were waving yellow, but the geometry of the problem was such that you couldn’t see the TR until the last minute, it was hard to tell if the gap was on the right or the left, and everyone was pretty bunched up because it was only the 2nd lap. Rich came thru a couple cars behind me, had a lot more traffic in front of him and didn’t see the TR astride the track. Rich smacked it pretty hard and we got pulled back to the grid for a bit.

Eventually we were back to green flag racing. I got past Jay Stoops on the front stretch after a TR slowed him down in 9. That put me in 5th which I was pretty stoked about. It didn’t last tho. Jay took a scenic route from 1 to 2, then spent 10min charging hard back up and got on my ass when they threw the white flag. I was struggling desperately with no traction to keep him behind me. As we headed into 8/9 we rapidly overtook the orange rabbit. I had to enter 9 from the marbles on the outside so I was way slow. I knew I was in trouble and at risk of Jay taking me before the checker 200yds away. Jay was sneaking up on my inside so I tried to stay close to the Rabbit so it would pick Jay off. The Rabbit tho moved WAY inside which opened up enough gap for Jay to get between us and he went for it. I got bumped as he went by and I was kinda pissed about that, but I think mostly I was reacting to the fury of losing 5th so close to the checker, and the spike of fear I felt when the car suddenly lurched under me right at the very worst place at RR to get bumped.

Sunday qual got cut short because a TR brewed up. Grid used Sat qual results. The group elected to do a standing start.

I started 6th. Sandro slid off the track at 1-2 so didn’t make it 3 turns with the front runners. I spent a lot of time in 4th behind Stoops, McKay and Whitinger. It was an awesome spectator event. It was everything I could do to hang with them and they were running those lap times at 12" spacing and running defensive lines. My video is killer.

Around 12m into the race Stoops got a little sideways in 9 trying to get past a Miata. This forced McKay to check up and hosed him for the front straight. That put me in 3rd. I’d never been 3rd in a SpecE30 race before so I was wearing a big-ass smile of determination.

Which is when I almost rolled the car.

Our tires were getting slippery as hell and I plumb ran out of track at the exit of one. I saw the track edge coming and I did everything I possibly could to squeeze just a little more traction out of the 4 corners so I wouldn’t slide off. Which is when I slid off. I went both feet in, ended up sliding thru the grass completely sideways, and both left side tires caught in something. I didn’t get 45deg like Al did a couple years ago at RA, but I bet I got 30deg. It was a big “UH OH” moment.

Unfortunately there was a fair amount of traffic so it took a couple long moments before I could re-enter the track safely. I did some more laps, but my heart wasn’t really in it. Then we went FCY and I thought “maybe I can still make something happen here.”

In front of me was a 944, Sumpter Smith and then an e36. Neither the 944 nor the e36 seemed t0o focused on catching up to and staying with the pack. I could see by the way Sumpter was riding the e36’s bumper that he was concerned.

Finally we came around 5 and I figured the Green might be coming. So I got right on the 944’s bumper and watched the towers like a hawk. Sure enough as I got into 9 the tower dropped Yellow and I was on it. Everyone was caught napping. I darted by the 944, got stymied for a moment because Sumpter was beside the e36, then the latter pulled away and took me with him. Doom on Sumpter.

I think that’s how we finished. I’m not sure how many places I lost trying to flip the car outside of 2. The lead group had gotten a fair amount ahead of the pack so maybe I only lost a couple positions and ended up 6th.

It was terrific hanging out with everyone. I finally met Joel Barber who has a shop in Greenville that does cages and can also build you a complete SpecE30 for surprisingly little. I also met a fellow Savannah type that is looking to buy a car.

Al couldn’t be at the race because some damage from Barber didn’t get discovered until a couple days ago. Rich’s car is going to the frameshop this week and should be ok. Rich might not be racing with us for several months tho. He’ll be off doing Army stuff.

I had a great time this weekend as well doing the double. The Thunder race on Sunday was pretty competitive until the FCY. Most of our class was still pretty tight together. The overall race leader being right in front of me sucked because it meant Issa and the rest of the front pack got to go all the way around.

It really went in the toilet when I was punted in T1 on the restart. John Clark talked to me after the race but told me he had been hit by an out-of-class car and that knocked him into me.

It spun me around and left me in a bad spot. Fortunately everyone else avoided me as I was a sitting duck. From my own footage I have a theory on who did it, but if anyone trailing the play captured the sequence on video, I’d appreciate hearing about it. I do know that no out-of-class drivers came over to speak to us/apologize about it.

Not my best outing, but still a fun weekend. Roebling proved to be more challenging than I expected.

Another Awesome weekend. Really close racing, hard battles and lots of fun Saturday night :woohoo:
Love this group… so much fun with everybody on and off the track, specially the latter. Got to race with some people that I had never raced before, specially cool. Which brings me to the best quote of the weekend… “If the car behind you is faster, that doesn’t mean you have to let him by”, by Mark Issa reflecting on the weekend and his battle with Walsh.
Love running the PTE races, that’s enough race time to have you satisfied for a whole month
Hope to see everybody at CMP. But before that, let’s get together at the On the Border this Wednesday… Robert?!

Saturday sucked!!

The handling on the car was terrible and had been the couple of times I drove it which was not often over the last couple of years. Qualified 11th and finished 12 after a spin in 3. The car was completely unpredictable and scary. I really felt I was riding the car vs. driving it. After explaining my issues Sumpter Smith climbed under the car and took a look. He noticed one my rear sway bar links was turned the wrong way causing one side to bind up. After getting the car on the Walsh/Lako lift we also noticed the front passenger side sway link had broken. All in all a total mess underneath. Thanks to Scott we got it sorted and I was excited about coming back on Sunday now that I knew the car would be back to what it used to be.

Immediately after one aborted lap in sunday qualifying I knew things would be different. The car felt great. It was fun again. I had to start 11th again but got a really good start and passed a few at the start. Eventually settled into a pretty heated battle with Lako which was tons of fun. I feel like I drove well finishing 6th and in the lead group. Not too bad after a long layoff. Only Sandro turned a faster lap during the race which makes me feel pretty good about knocking some of this rust off! Spec e30 has some fast drivers these days and I enjoyed meeting all the new guys( well new to me). I am glad to back. Looking forward to CMP!

BTW I have some good video but suck at editing and really don’t care to do so if anyone wants to volunteer to edit I’ll send the files. I have really good footage of Rangers near rollover!

The best part of Roebling was making it there. Group3racing managed to replace a motor and repair 2 crashed cars from last event and bring home some good results. Even better we managed to come home without damage after some tight racing. Qualified P4 and managed to keep the position for Saturday after exchanges with Stoops and chasing Ryan but I blew the standing start Sunday when I could not find second gear and had to upshift to third. Fell way back but managed to find my way to 5th by finish. Good racing with Moses again, welcome back to the circus. Ill get some video up soon. Point of interest: Getting Sandro bombed  does not effect his driving performance. Will come up with something new by Road Atlanta. Big fun as usual.

Damion

Front swaybar endlink issue would explain why your car was so loose at CMP last year…

I really think it was the rear bar issue that lead to the front issue because I heard a pop from the right front corner first session at Roebling. I think with the drivers rear link binding up it was putting even more stress on the front passenger side link in the corners. But I ain’t no engineer. Just glad its fixed!!

I had a great weekend! Saturdays qual was slow, I kept running 1.28s and I couldn’t figure out why I was almost 3 seconds slower from the rest of the field and qualified last…Saturdays race was exciting even though we only had a couple laps do to the accident and finished 13th. Glad your ok Bratton! Saturday night was great! Never a dull moment with the Spec E30 crowd!:stuck_out_tongue:

Sunday for me was by far the best! I planned on following Mark during qualifying, so I could learn what I was doing wrong and hopefully knock a few seconds off my lap times but that didn’t go as planned since we only had 2 laps. Sundays Race was awesome! I really enjoyed the standing start! I ended up getting behind Chuck and on my 3rd lap I pulled a 1.26.086! which surprised me considering I was running high 1.28s all weekend! For the 6 or 7 laps I was behind Chuck I was having a ball!! Until I spun in T4 facing Laura and did a J turn in the dirt and came to a stop and the fact that it stalled didn’t help. But when the double yellow came out I was eyeballing the closest E30 I could find and made that my goal to get around her. After some exciting laps behind Laura and us both trying to fight through traffic I finally got around her and finished 13th.

Great weekend racing with you guys!!
Thanks Sandro for the tires!! That really helped out a lot!

“Almost rolled.” SpecE30 race, Roebling Road, 13Apr. Having qualified unusually well I ended up with a ringside seat to watch an incredible 3 way battle for the lead. Then I slid off at the turn-in of turn 2, got sideways in the grass, the left wheels caught on something and the car almost went over. Almost.

It took a Full Course Yellow to really get back into the fight. Passed one more as the FCY dropped and was unable to catch Damion Moses before the Checker flew. Started 6th, worked my way up to 3rd, then finished 6th.

Great video Scott. Commentary is hillarious

#13

I’m working on getting video edited, and having a horrible time, but I should have some soon. That said, Gress put in a hell of a drive both days, the strongest I’ve seen him do. Issa and Clark have made huge improvements, too, good work for both of those boys. And the usual gang, Espinosa, Stoops, Walsh, Lako, Whitinger were all fast. Note: Espinosa sucks at wrestling, especially when drunk, so don’t fear him. Clark is over 400 pounds, so don’t wrestle that guy, and don’t piss off Issa or he will get essentially naked and take pictures in your car.

#14

Dang, I missed all that? The one time each year that I don’t spend the night at the track and I miss the naked wrestling.

#15

My thoughts: not something you’d really want to see.

#16

Maybe I should rethink looking at motorhomes and stick to hotels instead. Some things you can’t unsee.

#17

Scott, that was an AWESOME video, I just finished watching it and it was as intense as racing itself. I LOVE the comentary, except the part where you didn’t battle with me. A friend of mine said: “Just because the car behind you is faster, that doesn’t mean you let him by”. Hahahahaha :stuck_out_tongue: , what a great weekend, you were rocking it hard!!!. Can’t wait for CMP.

Watched Ranger’s video this morning, will be a great recruiting tool. My GF said it was much better than the Indy car races (and commentary) I make her watch.

Scott, the fact you finished 6th shows how a train of cars can break away from the pack and leave them.

As far as Rasslin goes, will see if the “POONTANGLER” can make an appearance at CMP.

I finally got my videos all sorted out and uploaded.

Sunday PTD Thunder Race https://vimeo.com/92564306
Saturday Lightning SE30 https://vimeo.com/92545311
Saturday PTD Thunder Race https://vimeo.com/92478929
Sunday Lightning SE30 https://vimeo.com/92476416

There is good racing in all of them. I drive off in the Sunday Thunder race, and get a terrible pace car pickup later, but good racing up until that point.

Gress drives as strong as I’ve ever seen in the Sunday SE30 Lightning race. Lots of good action in that video.

In the Saturday SE30 lightning race you can take a look at where the Thunder Roadster was parked before Bratton took it apart for him.

The Saturday Thunder race has good action also.

As I said earlier, Gress, Issa, Clark were my surprise performers of the weekend. The guys up front did what they usually do, but those three were really showing some good stuff.
