Road Atlanta Stories and Video thread

Dang what a great weekend. A big field, thanks in part to a passel of newbies (Woohoo!), the threatened thunderstorms never arrived, lots of beer and hilarity, no FCYs, and no big incidents.

Thanks to the Whitingers, and especially Melissa, for putting out so much chow 2 lunches in a row, and to Sandro for picking up the tab for everyone Sat night.

So what caused the DQs ?

#3

Mostly passing under yellow. Not all of which were correct calls by the corner worker. Video evidence has already been reviewed and results are being updating. At least 4 of them should get reversed.

The car was fast out of the trailer and I managed to qualify third on Saturday. The race didn’t go as well; entering turn one on lap four, my car got loose and again in turn three. I smelled coolant, there was a yellow flag, a slow out of class yellow escort (or something) and I assumed he dumped fluid on the track. It took me another 1.5 laps to realize that the coolant problem was with my car. Apparently, when I swapped in my freshly built by Rich race motor on Thursday evening, I didn’t get one of the coolant lines tight on the thermostat housing. This line of course blew off during the race and I dumped coolant/water. After swapping the head gasket, my oil and water are mixing which indicates either a cracked or warped cylinder head. No worries though, I’ll be back and running in a few weeks. Thanks to all that pitched in and helped me swap the head gasket at the track. It’s very nice to have helping hands when you need them and the South East crew is always great about helping others!

+1 to the Chow by the Whitinger clan, UUC, and Ranger Gress. Lunch on Saturday was really awesome!!! Thanks to Sandro for entertainment and dinner on Saturday!

You need to have a heart to heart talk with your motor builder:sick:

Saturday and Sunday photos.

#7

Awesome. WTG on the pics!

#8

Motor builder is good; it’s the motor installer that is the problem…

#9

One in the same, I take it?

Sick pics

Just another great weekend with the SE SE30 crew - it never gets old saying that :stuck_out_tongue:

So, I wanted to try a different strategy on tire pressures and pumped 32 psi (cold) came out at 40 - the point was to get less drag on the back straight from the tires, I knew the car would be more of a handful in the turns, but I was betting it would be worth it, no way! no help in the back straight and really loose on the turns, stay with going out at 25-26 cold.

Saturday’s race was a lot of fun, raced Ryan and Alex hard, and really enjoyed sharing John Clark’s first ever podium, his first time after 2+ years of racing. Alex got caught in some traffic, Clark took advantage on the last lap to grab 3rd place.

Raced the SE46 Saturday as well, and I have to say they are awesome, it is the natural step after SE30, they have the same dynamics, and it’s really cool to drive a race car with a proper suspension, a lot more precision. If only our SE30’s had a proper suspension, I wouldn’t see the need to drive anything else, but since a rule change would be a huge stretch, SE46 is the future.

Sunday was uneventful aside from apparently breaking something on the left rear, maybe the toe gator teeth got loose or something, it happened on T3 about half way thru the race and almost lost it, but thanks to the yellows and the lead that I had built up I didn’t have to drive 10/10ths.

Great to see new faces, once again the series is growing - I love it!

How about a meet and greet this Thursday at the “On the Border” on Mansell Rd. in Alpharetta like we used to do!!! - need to get to know the newbies a little more

One more

Thanks to all you guys for making my racing experience a great one to remember
Alex sorry for hosing your turn 5 and being the slow traffic, Thanks for the food and hospitality shown by the Southeast SE30 group!

Had fun as usual but not my best weekend. Two brake jobs and a loose diff kept me from socializing on Saturday and stomach issues kept me inside on Sunday (no it was not Mexican food). I drove dads car Friday and it taught me that my car has serious handling issues. I actually think they are holding me back from improving because I can’t trust my car to stay under me when I push it harder. I will ride it out until I have time to dig in. Y’all come to Bowling Green at the Corvette museum in July.

so you guys ever dyno at the track???

nasa-mid-atlantic seems to have their new mobily dyno guys sorted out, the checked the top 3 in spec e30 on the dyno and the numbers all came back in the range you would expect…earlier in the year, they were getting some wierd #s, but that appears to be sorted out

#15

It would be helpful, since a lot of people seem to be complaining about a lack of hp :stuck_out_tongue: , but we’ve only dynoed at the beginning of the year so far. I’m looking forward to the Dyno at VIR in July, so we can be ready for the Champs.

#16

dyno at the beginning of the year was not at the track right?

#17

correct. it was at Balanced Performanced, a shop 30 min away!

In general terms the SE tries to get a mobile dyno to a SE event at least once/yr. The event participants aren’t necessarily told in advance that a dyno is planned to be at the event.

There is a plan to have a dyno at the track for a SE event or one of our two “shared” events. I’ve been kinda the pointman on this for the last couple years. What drove my interest is that I wanted to create an opportunity for as many of us as possible to get on a dyno before East Coast Champs. That would make it easy for folks to confirm that they were far enough under the threshold that they had no worries for the Championships.

My dyno scheming became more difficult this year because arguably the best mobile dynojet outfit in the SE, Rossini Racing, made their dyno "non-"mobile.

To counter that point, with my FWD car, the operator let go of the wheel on deceleration, and it immediately cocked full left and grinded the drum to a hault…on my new hoosiers. And another time, they almost had a CRX come off the dyno becuase they only put one strap in the front and back, and as he was going up through the gears, the car started moving/rotating. i happened to be there waiting for my run and had to yell at the guy to stop before the car fell off.

that is besides little things like my friends car dynoing 6 under and mine 7 over our tunes, both 3 days after dynoing at our home shop.

i’m sure there are good stories, but from personal experience, i haven’t been impressed.

A Dynojet dyno is only as accurate as the person operating it.
