Replacing U joints

#1

Has anyone ever replaced the U joints on their drive shaft? Is it even possible? Thanks

Not really a DIY job as it requires machining and balancing.

BMW claims that they are “not serviceable” They will ask you to buy a complete driveshaft.

However if you take it to a reputable driveshaft shop they can machine it to fit a new joint and re-balance the shaft. Figure $50-150 depending where you are at.

Wow. I totally did not know that. I’ve had a spare driveshaft in my attic for years because I thought they weren’t repairable, at least not for a reasonable price.

That is probably just what all the places selling remanufactured driveshafts are doing. That is what I did by the way. I had Robert send me one, and then I sent my old one back.
