Replacing LSD clutches

#1

Many thanks for Mike and Ed Davidson for extensively photo-documenting the procedure to R&R the E30 limited-slip differential clutches. It’s something I’d been wanting to do for some time, but didn’t know how to proceed. It’s actually not terribly difficult to do if one is organized and has a reasonably-well equipped set of tools.

My tired differential, prior to replacing the clutches, was clicking off on my Craftsman torque wrench, using a 30mm nut on the center, at 41 lb/ft. After installing a new set of clutch discs, and flipping the dog clutches over, as recommended, the new figure was 56 lb/ft.

The how-to document can be located at

Factory 3 Performance has also located a source for some beautifully-made 4130 chromoly clutch discs. Can buy the clutches individually or packaged as a kit.

very cool.
Thanks Mike and Ed, and Chuck for hosting it.

Now if it were only so easy to rebuild the transmission in my '91 M5 with less than 60,000 miles on it … grrrrr
cheers,
bruce
