Removing the center A/C console

Is it legal to completely remove the Evaporator/Heater/Blower/ductwork/OBC “chunk” that sits in the middle under the dash? I have it out right now and it really opens up a lot of room under the dash. It’s also kinda heavy.

I read the rules but I want to make sure before I proceed. I was thinking of make a simple sheet metal box to contain the heater core and a fan to blow through it and out the defrost vents in the dash.

9.3.5.2.2 says the AC can be removed and 9.3.5.3.3 says that the heater core box and related hoses can be removed. So I’d say that you don’t have to retain that.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have read that the heater cores can explode and cause burns from the hot coolant. Perhaps I should loop the heater core hoses and install an electric defroster.

The usual heater core failure is a leak, on a BMW or any other vehicle. About the only way the heater core is going to explode would be in the event of a massive overheat coupled with a simultaneous failure of the cap to lift. The former can be prevented by keeping an eye on engine temperature and the latter can be prevented by replacing the 20 year old cap (and reservoir) with new parts.

I had the plastic end blow out on my heater core but the water was contained by the box and ran out under the car. This happened the first time I drove it after installing a set of silicone hoses.
