Removing stuff behind dash

#1

Heater doesn’t work, AC is gone, dash is now out. How and what can I remove from back there? Is the whole heater box something that can come out? The ducts were easy, the large mass right in the middle looks heavy and worth removing.

#2

Yes, you can remove it. Once you have the wiring/hoses/etc disconnected from the box you can access the 4 nuts from the engine bay. You’ll need to remove the panel in the center of the firewall to get to them.

#3

Can I just slash and cut the wires to it? Or do they also go to something else that I might bugger up?

#4

be careful cutting wires, trace them back to the source if you can. yes you can clean up everything back there. my dash is empty save for the cluster and steering column.

#5

How is the box bolted in? Through the panel on the firewall behind the engine?

It’s attached to the firewall via the 4 posts at the top of the unit in this picture:

So you remove the panel on the firewall, then remove the 4 nuts on those posts…and assuming everything else is disconnected you can just pull it out of the car.

I wouldn’t cut any of the wires. If I’m remembering correctly it’s a single plug that ties that box into the rest of the car - all the wiring for the box is attached and will come out with it.

#7

Great, that’ll make it easier if it’s just one plug. My only hurdle will be getting it out past the knee bar for the cage…

Knee bar is definitely in the way. Guess I’ll take it out in broken little pieces…
