Remote Oil Filter ok in SE region

#1

I’d like to remote my oil filter. Legally. That would make the install of oil temp and pressure sensors, and warning lights easier. It would also allow easier connection of an Accusump, and best of all, oil filter changes would be a snap.

I think that this would make it easier for folks to install additional oil sensors, and Accusumps. And if you make something easier, more people do it. We might find later that having oil pressure warning lights provided interesting info on some of the turns at our various tracks. We have a working assumption that some turns cause oil pressure drops and that is one of the causes of bearing failure. But our data on this sucks because most of us aren’t watching our gauges in the middle of fast sweepers.

We might also find that engines last longer with Accusumps.

Finally, it would sure make oil filter changes a snap.

I can’t see how this would be performance related.

Unless someone’s got real heartburn about this, lets get a formal call from Chuck.

A formal call? Doesn’t work that way.

The rules say what they say, and the protest process is the process. I’d personally be surprised if a protest were filed over something like this, but much like turn signal stalks, if the rules don’t say…and somebody wants to make an issue of it, they can…

I’m not convinced there is a systemic problem with race-driven M20 motors. Many of them survive years of race/DE duty with no problems. Our poor unfortunate friend has munched 5 motors in rapid progression…Much like Kchildre’s clutch debacle.

His clutch problem had a root cause which we may never know (My guess is the driveshaft but no one will give me odds) and the 5 blown motors are either an incredibly bad string of luck or something external to the motor itself that is causing the failures.

So, advocating immediate changes to rules to improve the oiling situation I don’t believe is warranted, and not very likely to happen.

Naah, we are a benevolent dictatorship. You’re being too nice today. Where’s the hidden Chuck Taylor meanness? For SpecE30 in our region, you are the man. You say it and “it is so”. I should get my wife to give you a call. She’s all about “I say it and it is so”. She could help you with that meanness thing too.

Scott, you aren’t going to get a formal reply.

I’d love to see your non-performance parts as an option to the rules, but, again you’re not going to get a formal reply.

I’d suggest that we discuss this non-performance option/tweak among racers at the next race meeting. Your data could help in the future. We’ve got some crash data/bumping/penalties that I’d like to get responses to at that same meeting.

But, if you can’t wait, you’ve got my nod to never bring up the modification. I hope it works, too.

Can you wait, or do we need to express our thoughts here?

Have I over stepped my authority as a concerned racer?

Regards, Robert

I’ll take a DQ over a busted part, engine, whatever any day of the week.

SE seems to add a healthy dose of common sense to our rules, probably helps balance out the mediocrity.

An Accusump won’t hurt, but I’m not convinced that it is necessary if the bottom end, oil pump & relief, and a properly fitted crank scraper are in place. I have found that the choice in oil filters matters, with OE oil filters yielding the best results. I don’t use anything else now after having bad results with generic oil filters. A remote filter makes changes marginally easier, but I change oil and filter every other weekend and don’t find the OE setup to be a bother.

I don’t have a problem with someone running a remote oil filter, but I question whether it is worth the increased expense.

I note that the plumbing for an Accusump is unrestricted, save for the requirement that metal hose be used in the cabin.

It’s very important for an Accusump to get clean oil, otherwise it get’s scored inside and it’s piston won’t seal. Therefore it might be entirely reasonable for one to put a filter on the Accusump plumbing.

I love it!!! I completely, totally, 100% support that reasoning. I will not protest you for installing an Accusump as you describe. Until you finish ahead of me.

It could even be part of the oil cooler setup since those are unrestricted in terms of placement.

Creative and with no objection (thus far, and why would you?) from the racers. Gotta love it.

accusumps are already legal…

Actually, since oil coolers are free, who is to say two cannot be used. The Oberg flat screen type is a large aluminum housing designed to cool the oil:laugh: Chuck (not Taylor)
