Remote oil filter mount?

#1

Just wanted to make sure that, according to the current rules, a remote oil filter mount, even using a stock filter, is illegal… right?

I’d like to move the filter so that:[ol][li]It’s easier to change, and[/li][li]It’s easier/safer to tie in an accusump (a sandwich adapter won’t ensure that the oil in the accusump is filtered and the oil cooler return could be cut off by the thermostat).[/li][/ol]

Presumably there isn’t any performance advantage, as long as I use a stock filter & it stays in the engine compartment, right?

Dan,

My 240z track car is set up for an accusump, but it is not currently installed (on the shelf). The adapter, looks likewhat you described in an earlier message, The adapter on the engine has 2 lines coming from it, one to the remote filter mounted on the wheel well, the other to the oil cooler. The oil cooler return line comes back to the remote filter. There are 4 ports on the top of the remote - one is open for the accusump, the other is used for an oil pressure sending unit for a warning light. I don’t know if there is a performance advantage either, but the oil remains remarkably clean - after a whole season of track events it still looks fresh.

Well, good to know that there’s no apparent performance increase…

…but I still need an official interpretation of the rules… :ermm:

I don’t see anything in the rules that say you can move the oil filter. I sure wouldn’t protest you, but some a$$ might.

Not sure how many events you do in a season, but I try to change my oil after every 3 events…

I change my oil at about the same frequency, just out of habit, but it was really clean. I usually run Mobil 1 10-W30. What do most folks run in spec e30?

According to Carter, what I’ve described is kosher, although he’s of the opinion that it’s superfluous (and it probably is, but I’ve had a couple of occasions at the last few HPDEs when the oil press idiot light has come on in left handers and once in the event of a red flag stop at VIR).

Is there a rule that allows this? If not, that’s something he should add to the 2006 rules.

Lance,

Do you have or are you building a SpecE30? It doens’t say on your profile.

Carter says that under the current rules it’ll be treated as part of the plumbing for the accusump. I previously posted in the 2006 Rules Thread that this need to be clarified.

brain,

I’m building one. Actually more like demodding one.
