Rear wheel bearings: is there a certain direction?

#1

when installing the rear wheel bearings, is there a certain direction they go in? I noticed one side has a little tapered edge. Tapered edge in first to help guide it straight?

Nevermind. I got it. I think.

I figure that bad wheel bearing was slowing me down at least two seconds a lap

R & R procedure?

Does anyone have nice detailed write up (like the Davidson LSD repair document) for rear wheel bearing replacement?

Bentley says one needs special tools. What special tools are they talking about?

You need a tool to pull the hub and the old bearing from the trailling arm. You also need this tool to press the bearing and hub back into the trailing arm. I have this one… http://www.toolsource.com/wheel-bearing-p-104185.html It works well. I have used it on my E30 and my M Coupe.

I have one bad rear wheel bearing. I thought about doing it myself but I think I am going to take the car to a shop.

I think there are two BMW tools for the job. One for removing and installing the CV half shaft and another for removing and installing the bearing.

I just did this job. I used the resources noted above and agree with all of the above. A few other thoughts. You will need PB Blaster or equivalent to help free up old rusty parts. The drive flanges on the axles are easier to drive out than get back in. Try putting in freezer to shrink - use PB blaster and clean threads. Put the new bearings in the freezer for a few hours as well. You may need to take the hubs to a machine shop to cut off the outer races of the bearings if they are stuck to the hub. The puller is necessary to do this job. Don’t forget the circlip holding the bearing in place.
