Rear main seal

I was chasing what I thought was a transmission leak. It might be the rear main seal. I removed the seal to find a decent score around the crank where the seal was riding. I installed a Victor Reinz seal. It looked identical to the one I took out. I noticed that Guten sells a “new” style seal which it states does not use a spring. Is this new style seal better? The seal I used was a reddish color and looked like every other seal I’ve ever changed in other types of cars.

V-R gaskets and seals aren’t that well thought of. I don’t know of the new seal you speak of. IIRC Metric Mechanic prefers OEM seals on the crank.

Get the corteco or OEM seal. Both are the new style without the spring.
