Rear end noise

#1

Just installed a LSD and it makes a heck of alot of noise. It makes a low grade scraping noise (like rusty rotors)when going straight.
If you turn at all it sounds like unlubricated gear noise. The initial gear oil was clean when I replaced it with Redline 75w140 before the first drive. I drained it again after hearing the noise, again clean. I have since pulled it back out for inspection removed the chunk found no metal, no scaring and the bearings seem perfect. THe cv joints on both sides move freely and the hubs make no noise. I may have a ujoint that is weak which I would like to replace while I have it out but I am not conviced that it is the source of the noise since I only heard the noise after the LSD was installed. I have heard about the GM additive but the noise seemes more extreme than an addtitive could quiet. Any Ideas?
Can I replace the joint only or do you have to replace the entire rear drive shaft?

don’t know about the diff noise, but there are places that can replace the U-joint on an existing driveshaft.
cheers,

I installed a used LSD and it was bad. Replaced it with another and it made noise. Turned out to be the dust shields were bent and rubbing on the output shafts. You might want to check them to make sure they are not bent and making the scraping noise.

it might be the issues guys already described, or it might be completely normal.
Let me explain - since you drained old fluid, now after refill, fluid needs time to work itself into clutch packs, etc. Give it couple of days of driving and if you can find a parking lot and do tight left and right turns. If noise is still there try adding a little bit of friction modifier. If after all this you still have noise issues start troubleshooting for parts’ failure.

I ordered a new driveshaft today since I know the joint is bad. I’ll put it all back together, use the additive and make several left and rights. I hope that works! Next step would be to put the old rear back in and see if the noise is still there I guess.

Noise is gone after reinstalling original rearend. Still found nothing wrong with the LSD. The place I got it from swapped it out for annother one though so I’ll try it soon. At least we found a bad ujoint and cv joints in the process.
