Racing Seats

#1

As I prepare my car to immediately do HPDE’s and eventually race, I am addressing seats. I know BMWCCA events require you to have the same setup in the passenger seat as the driver. Are NASA events the same?

not all BMW club DS’s require equal seats either. (e.g. Rocky Mountain region) We do require equal level of restraint (but not identical brand/model like some oddly do)

Interpretation of the "same restraint" rule is a local thing. And in the end it is up to your instructor as they can refuse to ride in a car that they feel is unsafe. If you don’t have the same type of seat for each side and the same type of harness, though not necessarily the same brand, you leave yourself open for being judeged as being in violation of the rule. And since 5/6/7 point harnesses can’t be properly routed with an OE seat (no shoulder or sub strap holes) you wind up being on shaky ground.

That said, I ran a 5er all last year with an Evo in the driver’s spot and the OE seat for the passenger and with 5-point harnesses on both side. Nobody had any complaints…

Thanks, Jlevie. That’s basically what I was thinking. I am not suggesting putting a milk crate in the passenger side for the instructor to sit on. It may be the OE seat but it will be safe.

Have you used them?

#12

Honestly, Yes, for 3 days. I pulled them cause my wife hated hers and I want matching seats. The pictures speak for themself. They are in brand new condition.

#13

just an fyi - they are stamped FIA 8855-1992, so you would have to have a seat back brace to use them.
cheers,

Hi Bruce,

Got a question on the need for a back brace. How is the requirement for that determined?

I’ve got a new Sabelt Taurus XL that I’m going to be installing, and as I plan to share the car with my buddy in the endurance events, will be needing to be using adjustable seat mounts (Sparco).

Thanks!

Doug J.

Seat has to have an FIA certification newer than 5 years old, otherwise it needs a seat back brace.

Sasha

yes, and also supposed to have the proper FIA mounting, so ask if the Sparco satisfies that.

Just starting to build a car and was wondering what seat works the best for racing? What is the best one to go with?

Reed - use the post search function for this topic. Individual preferences have been discussed at length several times.

Like the other guys said as long as it has and 8855 FIA sticker on the seat its good for 5 years from when it was stamped. The only thing I’m not 100% sure on is your seat mounts, If I remeber correctly (I think GRM makes note of this in the previous issue gotta dig it up) the FIA cert follows only if the seat mounts match the seat; that would make sabelt seat/sabelt mount ok sabelt seat/sparco (or any other brand) mount not ok. Can anyone else who follow’s this closer (finished their car and is racing) please clarify

Just installed my MOMO race seat on VAC Motorsports rails (nice), and Momo sliders. It was a royal pita.

That "same restraint" rule is goofy.
