Race report.
Unfortunately cancellations resulted in the SpecE30 crowd consisting of only me an Al K. That was really a bummer.
Racing with BMWCCR is a little different. All the cars are faster, but there is a wide range of driver skill. And some of the drivers don’t know the SE tracks very well. Also, the combo of the 13/13 rule and the fact that their cars are pricey can affect how they react in close confines. Finally, those that do not race with NASA probably see us SpecE30 types as madmen.
The sum of all of that is one minute an E36 piloted by an expert flies by, and the next minute you’re hollering at an apparently lost E36 because although he just passed you on the straight, he then slowed so much at turn entry that it killed your momentum.
Over the course of the weekend I had E36’s spin in front of me 3X. The one at the exit of turn 9 was particularly good. The one in turn 5 was particularly dangerous. I was in a tight bunch of cars and he was astride the latter half of turn 5. Because of the other cars I didn’t see him until after I turned in for the second half of 5 so it was dicey. I just squeeked by in front of him, a little unsolicited help coming from Al K behind.
BMWCCA CR weekends really are a lot of track time for the dollar. On Friday we had 2X 30min practice, and a 30min qual. There was also 30min practice Saturday. Sunday’s practice got cancelled due to rain. You guys are missing the boat not participating.
Friday’s weather was great. BMWCCA CR doesn’t start by class so Al and I were mixed into the larger group. Each day Al and I qualed about 2/3rds back. I got a good start. The E36 in front of me was pretty close to the wall, but I figured that I could squeeze in there so I did. Alongside E36, to his very great surprise we headed down the front straight 4 wide. Some CR guys don’t have much stomach for that sort of thing so I was trying to worry him enough that he’d check up and let me take turn 1. I wanted to get him behind me so I’d have a buffer back there to give Al some problems. That didn’t quite work, but it was still amusing to see the anxiety in the E36.
A bunch of us had dinner at a nice steakhouse in Savannah. I brought Sarah. With babysitter that effort cost 1.5 shaved Toyos.
Saturday the weather turned cold and wet. Al doesn’t share my generally cautious nature so when he’s “on”, he’s hard to beat. He out qualed me in the rain. The rain made the CR guys cautious so we were a couple places forward at the start.
One again I got a good start. I got by Al and an E36 before turn 1, gained some ground when a tail slapper in turn 2 made folks nervous, and then got 3 more when someone went off at 3.
This was a 60min race with a required 5min pit. A bit after the halfway mark I waved to Al that it was time to pit. 4:50 seconds later I got snookered as Al took off. I roared out after him vowing to get that SOB. It took me 4laps of letting faster traffic by timed such that it would mess him up just at the wrong time, but got him I did.
The Wx was looking really bad for Sunday. I made major points at home by delaying going to the track long enough for Sarah to go to the gym. When I got to the track I found that due to the rain the morning practice had been turned into Qual and the race has been moved up. And Al wasn’t there because his windshield wipers had died the day before.
It quit raining but there was still standing water on the track. I wasn’t motivated enough to put wear on my rain tires when there was no one in my class to race with. So I sat the race out.
There’s really some great guys amongst the BMW crowd. Jason Crist brought everyone bbq on Thur. Bob Wright, brought a keg on Friday. These are SpecE30 kind of guys. On the other hand, some of them are so insular that they park 100m away from everyone else. What, they afraid I’m going to see their suspension settings? Is odd.
