Quick Disconnects

#1

If you have a steering wheel quick disconnect / adapter, will you share what are you running and are you happy with it - sloppiness, distance from the dash, your view of the guages, etc.

I am in the process of getting my interior set up for good including the cage and harness mounting points and am working on the steering and seating configuration. I’m looking at either the one from BW that has a weld-on spline plus a Momo adapter, or the one from LTB that attaches to the E30-Momo adapter, moving another 3" towards the driver.

Hi AJ,
I am trying to figure my seating position so I don’t have an answer for you but IIRC Tony at TC design will be doing your cage right? He might be able to help you with seating position, as well as quick disconnect. He also have quick disconnect for sale – see this page

http://tcdesignfab.com/products.html
and go all the way down

Igor

Hey Igor, thanks. Yes you’re right - I talked to Tony C. this week and he’s going to do my cage in December. We talked about the harness points and he emphasized getting my seat position permanently correct so the harness fit right.

That QD is sweet, thanks for the pointer. That is similar concept to what LTB has (although for approx $125 less). I started a similar thread on Bimmerforums and that’s where Dan Smith (sharkd) and Bruce (leggwork) both suggested a rules check, so I have also sent a note to Carter about rules for using an E30-Momo Adapter to QD. As well as a check on whether we can shim the steering wheel lower in 2007. Given how tall you are as well, I’m sure this would be something that could help you too.

here’s the thread on BF - one guy is 6’8", could be something you can use:

AJ,

I don’t think there is an issue with using a quick disconnect or a hub adapter for an aftermarket steering wheel. The questionable issue is whether or not you can lower the steering column using spacers or shims. Based on the rules and policy for enforcement it is not legal in SE30. I know everyone gets tired of hearing it but its pretty simple if you remember: If the rules don’t say you can do it, don’t do it.

Its a shame about the steering column because I could benefit from dropping mine an inch or so too.

Good luck on your build!

Absolutely. We all want stable rules and not be forced into tinkering mode to stay competitive, and I will respectfully abide by the rules without complaint. My hope is that for something like this that is no cost, quick change and results in a safer racecar that it may be considered in 2007. However, until I see it in writing I will not make the change, and I appreciate your view on the adapter/QD. That may be a clarification in the rules as well as adapters are not specified as allowed, although QDs are.

Cheers,

I am about 6’ 5 so I’ll add one more (wishful) vote to being able to adjust steering column. I am not ‘touching it’ until it’s per rules…

I don’t see this as performance enhancement, if anything it might lean towards safety (and I’ll be more comfortable driving the car)

Here’s my Tekniq Snap-Off and my mystery spacer. The previous owner (whom I never met – I bought the car though my mechanic) had the spacer mounted with what appeared to be a Grant (Edit: Flaming River) steering wheel, but Grant (Edit: Flaming River) does not make an E30 hub…

If anyone has an idea what kind of spacer it is, I’d appreciate it.

I’m 6’0" and I can see 98% of the cluster. There’s no play in the hub because of the design. I’m using the street-legal version – the race version does not have the lock…

I am pretty sure Grant does make an E30 hub adaptor. I got one a year or so ago. I sure like my Grant wheel and plan on moving it to my SE30 project from my E30 ITS car.

I think I ordered it from Autozone.

Unless Tekniq makes different bolt patterns, they are made to fit Sparco and Momo bolt patterns. So, your Grant wheel probably uses the same bolt pattern. Any Sparco or Momo adapter for E30 will work.

I’ve got the race version of the Tekniq Snap-off (same as yours except without the key lock) and I love it.

Grant wheels are a 5 bolt pattern, not the 6 bolt of sparco and momo.

I took a look at the grant site. Adaptor 6524 bolts onto the E30 steering column. I have a custom quick disconnect adaptor that I made. I think other (LTB maybe) sell a momo to Grant adaptor as well. I have the 12" Grant wheel and love it. My ITS car came with a Momo and it was 13". I removed it and installed my 12" Grant from my E24 race car. Now, the Grant will go to the Spec E30 and the momo back on the ITS car and maybe buy a new on for the E24 for I can sell it.

I think the number for the steering wheel I have is 762.

The current wheel is a Momo Mod 80. The mystery hub has both Sparco and Momo holes. Tekniq Snap-Offs can either be ordered with a momo pattern or a Tekniq/Sparco pattern

Here’s the stamping on the back of the Mystery Wheel (it’s not Grant, it could be a Flaming River):

I use the one from VAC that bolts to the shaft. It is expensive but works very well will no sloppiness. It comes with an adapter that mates up to any wheel. The distance is perfect.

You guys do know the trick to take the sloppiness out of the splines under the dash right???

If the steering rattles over bumps this fix will tighten it up.

Look up near the brake pedal. You will see a splined section of steering shaft and a nut then an unsplined section.

Grab a big enough wrench. Grab the steering wheel. Tighten the nut.

It compresses around the splines and removes some play that you can feel. especially on older cars. My318i rattled like crazy until I got a chance to tweek it.

I’m using the Snap-Off Race with a Luisi wheel. Big ducks, yes, but quick installation and zero slop. Worst thing about it… requires 2 hands for removal (unless someone knows a trick).
