Question about OBC relay box (black box above ABS)

#1

In my never ending quest to remove absolutely everything not needed, this box has me stumped. If you unplug it, the car will not start. It does not seem to serve any purpose other than powering the OBC and sending some chime signals, etc. Looking at the wiring diagrams it seems that if I spliced the green and green/red wires it would bypass the relay box and let the car run as normal.

Has anyone else run across this? I really would like to remove it to allow access to the power connections behind it.

Man, John, you really have given yourself over to the Dark Side! Apparently you haven’t yet internalized all the advice to avoid the temptation (“Use the Force, Luke”) to mess with the wiring. Once you’re done with this project you can thin out the wiring harness!:stuck_out_tongue:

I’m kind of a freak about electrical stuff, I know. I just can’t stand seeing a wire hanging there not doing anything. So far everything I’ve pulled has been fine. I’m being very, very methodical about it. Pull wire, start car. Pull wire, start car, check turn signals, etc. So far so good.

I think you are running into the OBC Code drive-away protection. I don’t have the wiring diagrams handy at the moment. But I think that’s what you should be looking to defeat.

I’m just going to leave it there for now. It’s not a weight concern, the thing doesn’t weigh a 1/4 lb. I just was trying to clean up the area some.
