Putting the Windshield Back IN...

#1

OK, I picked up the car from the cage shop the day before leaving for VIR last week.

I’m going to work on a friend’s race car this weekend, in my garage and need to get the E30 out of there…but the weather forecast states RAIN, RAIN, RAIN all weekend.

SO, I figure I’d best get the windshield back in.

Does anyone have any tips/procedures on doing this? I have some questions:

Should I use a new gasket and plastic insert trim piece? …or if the old one looks OK, should I use that?

Is the E30 windshield best installed using the 'ol string n’soap (or similar lubricant) method or just pop the gasket in all the way around, placing even pressure on the glass while working your way around?

I know I need to assemble the windshield/gasket before hand, but do I put the plastic insert/trim piece in before hand or after you get the windshield/gasket in??

Thanks in advance for any tips you can offer.

Put Gasket on Car. Get a helper to hold one side of the glass and you hold the other. Drop the windshield into the gasket at the bottom. Work the gasket open around the sides and top with your fingers and the windshield will drop in place. Take your time and it will be easy. Finally, install the locking trim strip. The locking trim strip is not fun to install without the special tool but it can be done.

I agree. The new lock strips are nice and flexible, thus easier to install if you have them. You will need lube.

Discussed some in above link.

Cool, thanks Teufelauto.

I saw your car as it was finished up at Jerry Fair’s, just got the cage done in the car I’m working on about 2 days before the March VIR event…Jerry does good work.

As I replied to the other post about putting the windshield back in - I’ll ask here as well, any of you have a good source for the “new” trim strip and windshield gasket?

I’m thinking I’ll at least get the trim strip as you stated the newer ones are flexible, this one is as hard as woodpecker lips!
