power steering feel

#1

How is the steering feel different on our cars without power steering?

I’m considering removing it. I already know you pick up a few hp, lose some weight, and get big muscles from driving in the paddock. I’m more interested in the feel at speed.

Thanks

At speed you won’t notice the absence of power steering. I personally think that the steering feels better (more precise and responsive) with no power steering as long as the car is traveling at better than 20mph. At that speed or below it requires effort to shift the wheel.

To see what it feels like, just remove the PS belt. If you don’t like the result it is easy to revert to assisted steering.

I had mine taken off about a month ago. I went to a track day a few weeks ago and truthfully never thought about it being taken off. It didn’t feel any different than before. Now I did have a “loop pipe” installed in the rack instead of just plugging where the lines connected. My “guy” told me that would allow a constant resistance in both directions and prevent heavy resistance turning the wheel one way or another.

I did notice the wheel was a little more bouncy (twitchy?), but it was not enough to bother me.

I leave the reservoir connected to rack by switching the supply line from the reservoir to the inlet of the rack. That provides a place for expansion of the fluid and makes it easy to be sure that the rack always has fluid for lubrication.
