Pot O nasty weather results

Let’s see… Enduro Friday. I watched the enduro, and it was definitely highlighted by Steve “The Donut King of Augusta” Foushee’s dramatic, temporary, victory in E2. That’s one for the books!

Saturday: Misery. Standing around in soggy shoes and clothes in 40 degree rain under minimal shelter is not my idea of a fun way to spend my free time. Fortunately, my qualifying time made it worth it as I’m not an experienced rain driver. Qualified 3rd? Race started and Travis blew by me using visibility on the outside of the front straight/T1 and made up spots that I was never able to get back. Well played, sir. Racing on Saturday was loads of fun. Had massive trouble getting the car to go through the esses, especially up the hill in T5. That’s where DeVinney and Travis found the biggest gains on me and ended up ahead for the rest of the race. However, if Road Atlanta’s finish line were 200 yards further down though, Travis and DeVinney would have taken home many fewer Toyo bucks. I made up a lot of ground and had them covered like a stick of butter on a Paula Dean biscuit. Johan had checked out right from the start, reminiscent of a young kid named MikeSkeen.com… He was in a different league driving in the rain…I think he even won the race, overall. Crazy fast in the rain. No video, no traqmate, nothing more than just being able to get in the car and drive. Blame it on the rain, Millie Vanillie style - overheard on Robinson’s iPod.

Sunday: more misery. It was even harder to motivate to do anything, even wanting to bother to qualify. Bad sleep the night before, cold, wet… Not sure why I do this to myself when for the same money I could be in Costa Rica surfing for the weekend. The needle runs deep… Qualified for shite in like 7th or something. So bad, that even Jones was ahead of me <-- embarrassing to admit. Again, Johan way ahead of the mediocre crowd, DeVinney in second. No split starts. Another awesome time of racing, to offset the awful ambient conditions. Had a blast racing, even fun racing out of class, somehow mustered enough energy to flip on the camera. Too many yellows, some super sketchy incidents getting cleaned up through the esses. Cool though that we raced for the entire duration instead of doing cool down laps under twin yellows and also the track dried out as the race progressed. Here’s Sunday’s race:

Many thanks to Patton for letting us use his trailer as the SE30 changing room and hospitality suite. Alex, congrats on doing so well at Road Atlanta first time there, as a rookie… Very impressive. Condolences for seeing how Road Atlanta’s jersey barriers treat most people. Congrats to Jones for taking home the 6th place loot on Saturday. Congrats to DeVinney for the win on Sunday and Johan on Saturday. By the way, Johan blew the upper radiator hose on the white flag lap on Sunday by the way, which sent him into the wall at T7 for those wondering/hypothesizing. Steve D, thanks again for the beers. A bad precedent to set because all I remember is that every time you finish ahead of us, you owe us free beer.

Final thought: As I was doing about 110 mph down the back straight into 10a on Saturday, not being able to see literally anything except a big grey cloud of mist from cars that I’m pretty sure were in front of me, I was wondering what could possibly have made me do this?

Enjoyed the blog, as always. Sorry to hear about the suspected rod knock.

You can try to hide it, but when I saw you with a heat gun trying to peel off decals in the 43 degree rain, I knew you were an optimist at heart.

Continuing the donut theme… Can we get Pantas to give Foushee the permanent number O for the rest of the year?

As the good book says - whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth…

(Hebrews 12:6 for those keeping score at home).

If I was a real optimist I’d have 69 for my number, or have gone with the Poontangler to Walmart looking for women Sat. night.

Gotta say BIG thanks to Al, Chuck, and Brian for saving my weekend (not to mention teaching me how to replace a halfshaft). Ditto to Jim for the good advice.

Also thanks to Robert for shelter from the evil elements!

Enjoyed it thoroughly gang. So when’s CMP, I can’t wait! :woohoo:

Hello Indy Jim

The DTOM vegetable was deposited somewhere between Atlanta and Haw River NC, in a place where others could enjoy its majesty.

Just thought you would want to know.

That is what Jones told you. I think he took it back to the dude hut.

That would’ve been the perfect excuse not to race on Sunday - I should’ve loaned my rains tires out!

Steve D wrote:
Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain. That’s the weather report from our 5 weekend sessions.

As on Saturday, the officials used the top-to-bottom qualifying times to grid the race (i.e. no grouping by class, no split start).

Grid was:
2 Johan
8 Steve D.
9 Jones
12 Walsh
13 Travis
14 Robert P
15 Reznikov
17 Geegar
19 Laura P
20 Gropp
23 Lako
26 Childress
30 Levie
35 Switzer
43 Haynie
44 McMennamy
54 Panther

Johan was head and shoulders above the field this weekend. An absolute master in the rain. With his overall P2 grid spot and rain talent, I never saw him. I had some fun battles with out of class cars, but never got to mix it up with any other E30s. From that perspective, Saturday’s race was more fun. Today Johan schooled me completely for 15 laps.

However, as he was battling with a Honda Challenge car with more hp, he knew a great run out of 7 was needed if he was to get/stay ahead. I guess he got a little greedy with the gas pedal and spun to driver’s right, ending his race.

Here’s the weird thing from T&S. The overall winner (a PTA car) lapped the SE30 all the way up to me and Johan (and he was only a few seconds from lapping me I think). Since he lapped Travis and finished 16 laps, Travis’ last completed lap was #15. Johan had completed his 15th lap ahead of Travis (then hit the wall).

Since Johan was ahead on that lap, the results show me in first, Johan in 2nd and Travis in 3rd.

Al had the rest of the list correct, I believe. This is my first Spec E30 win. Robert came over and gave me a big congrats, which meant a lot. I can’t tell you how nice it has been to hang out and BS with you guys (here an in person).

This weekend was kind of bittersweet for me, though. One good friend did big damage to his 996 GTS4 car, another friend likely needs to retub his Integra from an impact at the bottom of the esses. Another friend had a pretty solid hit in the right rear quarter after looping it in Turn 5. Good news is they are all uninjured. Bad news is it was my Miata. :frowning:

Oh well, he’s good for it.

Steve D.

PS - The R888s showed absolutely no wear problems this weekend. I’ve heard people saying they are more progressive at the limit in the rain than the RA1, which would just snap-and-spin. I don’t know if it is just the longer wheelbase, but the E30 on full tread 888’s was an absolute blast to dance on the edge in the rain!
I didn’t qualify but I made it to grid as they were pulling away…

It was a cold, nasty, wet weekend, but the racing was pretty good considering the conditions. I want to give a big Thank You to Robert Patton for the anti-fog/use of the trailer and to Chuck Taylor for delivering the brake pads to the track! I wish we could have had split starts to keep the battles closer, but definately understand why we didn’t. Other observations: Johan is a badass in the rain. Steve D is racer X. Patton drives hard no matter the conditions. Jones likes the beach. Geiger needs to look at mylaps. Indy Jim has bad luck/karma. Walsh and Lako are cool dudes. Reznikov and Gropp are fast rookies. Scott Mc doesn’t care as long he is at the track. Nothing gets to Fred. Laura digs the arrive and drive. Haynie can take a punch (at least an internet jab). M3 Bill wuss’d out, but has a strong new motor. Stroup always has car issues. Kelly somehow survived a weeknd w/o trans problems. Levie will work on anyones car for beer/cigarettes. Thanks for a great weekend. Looking forward to LeMons next…

Travis, who did you leave out?

What’s your comment for AL? Better yet, tell us some stories.

The taxi ran good and I can’t wait for the next event.

Jones wrote:

I do. :frowning: That is at the top of my “fix before next event” list. There were a couple times during the weekend I thought I was going to end up in Jones Beach.

Anybody have a good guide to use to troubleshoot?

Steve D.

The only easy fix is the light bulb on the dash.

After that it gets spendy and the only things you can even buy new anymore are the ABS wheel sensors.

The pump can be bad, and the harness is just a mess of wires and relays all 20 years old.

Good luck.

#59

The other easy fix is the fusable link inside the ABS Relay. That relay is found under the dash above your left knee to the right of the steering column. It is approx 1" x 1" wide and 1.5" long and has a shiny alum cover on it.

That was the initial problem with the abs on my car. You can take the alum cover off the relay and visually see if the link is intact or not. You can also test continuity with a volt meter. With the filament from a 7A BMW fuse and a soldering iron, I was able to fix mine in about 15mins.

Mine was out for a bit last year. It end up being an easy fix… the left rear wire had worn through.

Jim always paints a dark picture…
