Pocono North 5/31-6/1

In case anybody didn’t get the email from NASA NE:

Attention NASA Racers and HPDE Drivers: Pocono 5/31- 6/1

  1. For those participants wishing to drop trailers on Friday night the track gates will be open from 4 - 9pm only. The facility is not open during the day as they are already in NASCAR prep mode. We will have a limited Friday registration from 6-8pm.

  2. The track has informed us that their new Sunoco gas pumps will be up and running this weekend with 98 and 100 octane fuel

  3. A portable dyno will be available this weekend to get dyno pulls. There will be an additional fee for this service.

  4. NASA National has announced that the deadline for the neck restraint requirement ( for racers only ) has been pushed to July 2, 2008. This is because of recent factory backorders on HANS devices.

If you have questions feel free to call 973-253-3900.

Well it was one hell of a weekend. Saturday morning I got on the dyno to see how the car was doing, very bad was the answer. A/F was going dangerously lean after 5K and power fell through the floor as a result. 140HP was the max at 5K and it was probably down to 100 by 6K. Luckily for me, this weekend had the SE30 turnout it did and that SE30 drivers are always willing to help out. Without the time to try single things to see what fixes the problem, I changed everything I could that might help the A/F. I got a fuel filter from Jon, an ECU from the Davidsons and a AFM from Ray, can’t say thanks enough. After that stuff was put in, got back on the dyno and put down 153hp/156tq, was a very happy camper.
Missed practice and qualifying so I had to start at the back of pack, didn’t really mind cause I was getting to race. The car felt great, but it was a pretty uneventful race for me.
Sunday, me and Mike qualified around 0.1sec from each other with him starting in front and Andrew right behind us. Ray and Ed had to deal with some other classes mixed into the grid, but overall the class wasn’t too seperated. Andrew had an amazing start and blew past Mike and myself, splitting right up the middle of the pack in process. Not sure when it happened but Mike and I got passed him at some point and then began a really fun battle. I found myself in the lead but had to push 100% the entire track just to keep him behind me. After a bunch of laps, I read some traffic wrong and had to slow up coming onto the speedway, Mike took complete advantage and cruised by me. This is the point were things go south for me. Two laps later, I thought if I got the power down a little sooner coming onto the speedway I could possibly get by him turning into the infield. Unfortunately, I put the power down too soon, lost the back end, tank slapped, didn’t save it and got nice and personel with the unforgiving concrete walls of the speedway. Whole side is smashed up pretty bad, but hopefully it is repairable, I’ll have it at the frame shop in a few days. Now it’s a mad rush to fix it up for Hyperfest in 3 weeks.
When I get the chance, I’ll put the video up and some photos of the aftermath.
Even with a smashed up car on the trailer, it was still one of the best weekends/races I’ve had and I was still smiling on the drive home.

Sean, It was a really exciting race to watch, I can only image what it was like on the track.

I am ready to come up and lend a hand to help get it back together.

Here are a few pics I have from the day. The is video uploading now I will post the link soon.

Sorry for the shaky video, I was standing on a truck with a bunch of other people and it was very windy.

Great race guys.

UPDATED>>
Google is having issues at the moment, but I uploaded to Youtube.

My computer seem to have an issue editing all the clips to gether so the video is really choppy and poor quality. Like I said before a better version should be up in the coming weeks.

I also had some fun bombing around the track all weekend. Got some good advice on fixing my car up from the VA guys. Fun watching the race with PeakRacer. Too bad on secu99 finding the wall, but it was a cool race with lots of action. At least he got to be the most popular guy on the track with his cool new racing stripe attracting a big crowd.

I attached my traqmate file and would love to see if anyone else has one to share. I’m still running sloooooooooooow, but I picked up 4 seconds over the weekend on my times, so I’m pretty pleased with that. My engine also seems to be doing the same thing Sean had, so hopefully with another couple of ponies I’ll be a bit quicker.

Turns out I also broke during my last session. The linkage between the shift lever and the transmission snapped in two. Didn’t snap all the way till I was just about to drive home. So almost no one left at the track. Couldn’t jury rig it, so I was stuck. I begged a ride off someone to the Best Western and stayed an extra night, car safely locked into Pocono raceway. I was going to rent a U Haul truck and trailer and bring it home that way the next day, but things turned up. The UHaul guy is also a pretty decent shop. I got a tow from the track and he just welded the rod back together and I was on the road again. By 10:30am I was heading back all fixed up. The shop that helped out was:

Mike Gordon
Day One Auto
570.643.4438

He is on Rt. 115 between the track and Rt.80. He says he stays open track weekends to try and catch some extra business. So he seems to be a great resource near pocono if you need some quick fix-it welding to get home.

Looking forward to seeing people at Pocono again in July,

Sean I had a blast man. That was one the most intense races i’ve ever raced and you drove a hell of a race. We raced within inches of each other and never touched, that’s awesome! I really enjoyed the race and I hope your car gets fixed soon. I’m not going to hyperfest but I will be a VIR in July. I’m gonna try and upload my video but google video has been acting weird and the video is too long to put on youtube. If google video doesn’t work i’m just gonna edit the video to make it short enough to put on youtube.

cheers,
Mike

I’m glad you had a good time Mike, that definitely was on of the most fun races I’ve ever had.
Google was taking too long for the processing, so I threw the video on Vimeo, first time I’ve used it and it seems to work a lot better than google or youtube. You can put longer vids up and the quality is pretty good to, so maybe give that a try. This is the whole race, a few laps in is when you can see your car in the mirror and then pretty much never leave, until you pass me

Adam, when I get the chance I’ll post my traqmate data too

Sean,

Great Video and a great Race. How is the car? Is it at the frame shop yet? are you going to make it to hyperfest? Let me know if I can help.

what was the name of your cage builder? I think you said they were next to the GWB.
