Bad way to end a weekend. Glad you were ok. Get that thing back together and out on track!

As I was limping back into the pit due to a punctured tire (hit Herringtons rear quarter at the exit of T5 after he spun in front of me), I got to watch the incident. Great that you made it out without any injuries!

Hope to see you back soon!

#4

Good to see there are no injurys to drivers.

I’ve seen all three videos, Manhood, Herrington and from behind from Parkhurst’s car. Unfortunate incedent that coulda/woulda/shoulda been avoided.

Then, again, so should the incedents of yours truely, the Poopie Board points leader, have been avoided. Perhaps discussion on this should follow at the next Road Atlanta race.

On a more positive note, how was the racing weekend?

I’ll post some notes on the tech inspections later.

Dang, I wouldn’t have thought that a bump on the track there would have caused such a hard hit into the tirewall. How bad is the car?

I had a great time on Saturday. Got to dook it out with Sandro and Colin for 5th place. :woohoo:

Car is still on the trailer. Won’t turn over so not taking it off as I would not be able to get it back in. Looking for a local shop to see if I can get it there for an assessment. Looks allot like Lako’s damage from RA earlier in the year. front end off to the left side about the same amount…
Way out side my area of expertise or ability to fix or fathom a guess at the extent…

#8

Jon, Give me a call and I will talk you through some damage assessment. Hate to see it. Would like to see the other camera angles as mentioned by Patton.

#9

That doesn’t look that bad. Check that the frame rail is straight, check out your alighnment, replace the front fender and bang out the rear. Replace or bang out the door. Looks just like when I hit the tirewall a couple yrs ago after turn 3.

Congratulations to the podium position winners from Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday: the usual-Eric Palacio, Julio Palacio and new to the top three , Broderick Bauguess.

There were some really good races throughout the field on Saturday.

Sunday: New to the first position, Julio Palacio, followed by Eric and then Sandro. Sunday’s race was shortened due to lightening.

Paul, Colin, remember when Geiger used to do those goofy 6th place trophys?

Now 6th is a darned good finishing/qualifing position.

RP

#12

Geiger must have been around before I started racing in Nov 2012.

#13

Paul, lots of folks have been in and out of this series. Geiger and Robinson and Moses and Wilson and Canterbury and…they were all great folks to race with.

RP

#14

I think Geiger left right before I started in 2010. 6th is a very respectable position – especially when Walsh, Lako, Patton and Fred are in the mix…not to take away from the great racing we had.

It was a fine weekend of bonding.

Fred was there working on his perfect attendance record for the year…4? events w/o a healthy car.

Al was there only to discover that his rear subframe was trying to detach so that it might escape the bonds of this earth. If that had occurred at speed he might have left his entire rear end behind. Imagine how surprising it would be to have your entire rear end exit your car. “Fly little butterfly, be free”.

The problem is that Al got one of the coveted slots at COTA and he has to get his car fixed in a hurry so it can be shipped out. The mount point for one of the bolts that hold in the subframe tore away.

Here’s what you should check so this doesn’t happen to you…at least it’s my theory as to what happened. Down by your subframe bushing there are 2x 8mm bolts that go thru the car’s rocker panel. The key piece is the reinforcement that is part #5 here: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=1413&mospid=47322&btnr=33_0213&hg=33&fg=30 Make sure you have it. Al’s was gone (it’s JP’s old car for those that recall him fondly).

In the absence of that reinforcing piece, the 8mm bolts pulled thru. That allowed lateral forces to work on the big bolt holds the subframe. Those lateral forces tore out the sheetmetal cylinder that supports the big subframe bolt.

My thanks to the Bauguess’s for feeding me. Broderick is running HS cross country and track, and trying for a college scholarship. That took me back 35yrs to when I was obsessed by cross country, track and girls. I fared better in the former than the latter. Thanks also to Colin for bringing his wife for me to talk to. It was good to hang out with Greg and Paul, and Stoop says my problem is that at age 50 I’ve no more testosterone than a debutante.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that my suspension and alignment changes seemed to work pretty well. I’d been having rear wheel spin problems so loosened my rear sway. That made my car plow like a pig. So I tightened my rear sway back up but also removed some rear camber. The result was fairly balanced handling and no rear wheel spin. Nice.

I was not so pleasantly surprised by my tires. This weekend was my attempt to get a 3rd weekend out of RR’s. And it didn’t really work. I got a couple laps where they were 1sec slow, several laps where they were 2sec slow, than they would become 3sec slow in the latter 3rd of the race. Sigh. Such a bummer.

Qual Sat was as to be expected for me and old tires. The race was fun, but I steadily lost position as the tires got worse. Sunday qual was truly awful which had me starting Sunday’s race dfl. To my surprise, dfl turned out to be really fun. I may have to do that more often. I passed 4 people in the first half lap.

I really need to get more track time. The way my skills are deteriorating is irksome. I can totally see it happening. The less-talented among us need more practice at this to stay sharp. This makes it hard for me, having always gotten by on my looks.

My Sunday race vid consists of only my first couple of laps, which is where most of my fun was, and then I added Jon’s video of his crash.

Scott,

It will be good to have Fred and Robert back in the mix! Too funny about Stoops and the Low T diagnosis. Maybe he could share his secret to High T.

I know you missed me in your rear view mirror, but it was great to battle some of the other E30 veterans (David, Sandro, Colin, and Sumpter)

Thanks to Greg Smith for letting me use his RR’s on Sunday and to the Palacio’s for offering. I had a great weekend will do a report when I get caught up at work…

Jon - Good to see you are ok.

Sundays Race got real interesting when the rain started coming down. Kink + rain = holy pucker. I also found grip to be AWOL in 11, 14 and just about everywhere else. As much as I wanted the race to continue, in the end the back flag probably cost wal mart some serious bondo sales. The pic attached is from the back of the trailer 5 minutes after the race was flagged.

Thanks again to the Palacios for the brake caliper loaner…

I finally pulled the car out of the trailer this evening and put it into the garage. There was an odd rattling coming from the rear end as I drove around the block.

Later I put the car up on the lift and started trying to wiggle things looking for the rattling sound. Which is when I spotted the problem. Both BOTH of my rear shock rods were pushed right up thru the shock mounts. That means I did some or all of the last race weekend with no rear shocks.

It’s really quite nice to have a perfectly plausible excuse for sucking.

The rear shocks and shock mounts had been installed by the PO. I swapped over the entire rear end from Old #6 (may it rest in [strike]piece[/strike] peace) 18mos ago, but I didn’t swap shocks nor shock mounts. PO had not installed the black plastic tubes that go over the rear shock and I’d not bothered to fix this…not realizing that the long black plastic tube has an integrated 10mm ID washer that keeps the shock shaft from pushing thru the shock mount.

I found the parts from Old #6, puzzeled thru getting the stack height right on the old shock mounts and all is now better. My old shock mounts were a better design anyhow.

Hey, that’s exactly what happened to me at comp school (way back when). The washer also comes as a separate piece (ask me how I know…)
