pilot bearing

#1

I just noticed that realoem.com shows a felt washer with some cups around where the pilot bearing presses into the crank. Is the felt washer and these cups really necessary? When I removed the trans last wkend to change the input shaft seal I noticed that the pilot bearing was hanging out of the crank. I remember hammering it in when I replaced it last winter.

Current style pilot bearings are sealed and don’t need that stuff anymore. Assuming the one you hammered in is of newer style. If not just replace. They are cheap.
