Painting on a budget...

#1

This may have been posted here before, but I stumbled across this and thought that it could possibly benefit someone not wanting to spend big bucks to paint a race car…

Bruce - this does work and doesn’t look bad at all. One of Mike’s friends informed us he was going to do it - we laughed, joked about the roller marks, etc. But, it turned out great. I’m considering it as well -

I looked at it a while ago and it is a great option for inexpensive paint.

Wow that has to be the longest thread ever posted! I got thru about 8 pages and gave up. So one of you paint experts help me understand…

Most of them say they apply multiple coats, sand, multiple coats, sand, etc. I thought I read that with enamel you had to recoat within a small time window (1-2 hours) or wait for days? Is that the case? ARe they really turning this into a multiple week effort?

here’s some pics. It’s my roomates car. He simply used a paint roller and kept wet sanding between coats. It does take awhile but its very cheep. It’s also for sale.

Using a roller is penny wise - pound foolish. Painting is 95% labor. Why add a week of sanding to avoid buying a decent $100-$200 spray gun? I’ve done 6 cars now - I’d spend $100 everytime to save a few hours of labor. Just what my time (and more likely the avoided aggravation) is worth.

in that thread the OP is advocating that you have to mask less, the paint is cheaper, you don’t have to find a place that is appropriate to spray in, maybe fewer issues with dust settling on the paint

  • MAACO still sounds good though …

Masking takes 1-2hrs, still WAY less than sanding. You can spray any paint you can roll, so cost isn’t an issue. The Salazar ares are painted using ~$75/gal dupont Nason. If you take your time the finish is good enough to avoid sanding alltogether. All cars were painted in the driveway.

The 911 will be flawless - all about prep and picking the right time to spray (EARLY morning). Dust/bugs are still a problem even w/ a roller. I used Dupont Croma-system on it. It orange peeled in places and required some sanding first go around. Its been waiting for another few coats (had to fix 2 tiny body prep problems) but w/ my extra experience I should be able to avoid the peel this time out.
