Outside Wide-Angle Mirror Swap

#1

I just wanted to make sure that it is legal to swap the normal-angle driver’s side outside mirror (p/n: 51 16 1 901 170) with a passenger-side outside wide-angle mirror (p/n: 51 16 1 901 175).

While it’s disorienting to swap the D/S mirror on the road, on the track, it makes a huge difference at pit-out, especially when wearing a HANS device.

It’s not mentioned in the Rules, but I noticed that a number of cars have wide-angle adhesive mirrors on their D/S mirror.

Dumb question time - what’s the difference in the mirrors? It sounds like the passenger mirror must be rounded at the edge for the wide-angle? I guess I never noticed this. And are the left & right mirrors interchangeable? From memory I thougth they were different (mirror-image - ha ha) shapes?

Many cars have convex passenger side mirrors - they give a wider field of view, but make cars appear smaller. Hence, "objects in mirror are closer than they appear." If the p/s convex mirror can be placed in the d/s housing, it would provide a greater FOV on the d/s.

On the E30, the mirror shapes and connections are the same on both sides. (On an E24, you have to rotate the mirror 180°.)

This last weekend, I ran with a spare P/S mirror in the D/S on my E30 and it made things so much more manageable on the track. I just wanted to make sure that I can do that in race conditions.

As long as you’re just swapping the mirror glass, it won’t be a problem rules-wise.
