Oil Pressure Report for RA
Thread hijack, oil pressure discussions are boring.
Where’s Geiger?
Back to the more interesting hijack, I am here, waiting impatiently for it to be November so that I can beat up on all of you rah-tards (see movie The Hangover) at IFU3.

Road Altanta in Dec is a go for me. Magagnoli and Osborne are interested. Get the MA folks interested and you won’t even have to go anywhere.
This would be awesome. I will be in attendance for this one as well. If The Chariot of Victory doesn’t get burnt to the ground in the 8 hr enduro that Friday, we will have a race on our hands. Bring it. I’m always looking for new faces to embarrass :stuck_out_tongue: (aka southern hospitality)

Craig shortly will only be able to log on during the baby’s nap time, so you may have to wait awhile for his smart a$$ response, if he isn’t too tired to think of one.
Don’t worry… JP’s going to help me out. He’s had plenty of practice by now.

Steve D, despite your lame attempts at trying to oppress my racing ambition, I wish you good luck at Nationals should you represent the Southeast in SE30. I do hope you strive for something more than 6th place this time.

Would someone please send me a PM when it is safe to come back and not see any comments about oil pressure? Thanks.

Nah, if not oil pressure it’s the obsession of the month club, always a new topic on the horizon.

Maybe we ask the webmaster to limit Ranger to 1 post/day?

I would so rather collect good used M20s then worry about OP. If you race in this series without one or maybe two good spare engines then you should go buy an engine or two. We could also go on and on about the trannys killing third gear, but it is more logical to just have a spare tranny.

I’d be interested to know if any of these OP tests have been done using a 50 weight oil?

On that note I’m down for both IFU3 and Dec. RA it has been to long for old # 12

Wish us luck at lemons

Greg

The curiousity of engineer-geeks built the world. It’s been less successful at getting hot chicks into the rack tho.

Re. worrying about OP. It’s not so much a matter of worrying, it’s more of a wanting to understand.

Re. testing with 50 weight oil. I’ll be running Valvoline VR1 Racing 20W50 at RR this weekend. <$4/qt.

I did a bunch more reading about oils tonight. I’ll see about posting some of it on my website tomorrow.

10-4 we just think differently, thinking of the bearing failures of the past what weight oil were we using?

I was using Mobil1 10W30 and 10W40 when the first motor lost it’s rod bearings and then upon dissasembly 8 months later was found to have worn main bearings too.

It was the car’s origonal motor so it’s history is unknown.

The second motor was a junkyard motor. It’s rod bearing started going at it’s second event. It had Mobil1 10W40.

It’s important to note tho, that the viscosity label that a company’s marketing dept chooses for an oil is only one factor among many. For the bearings it’s really about maintaining an adequately thick oil wedge, and for the cam it’s about adequate ZDDP.

It’s easy enough to get oils with adequate ZDDP, and the oil wedge is a place where “good enough” will work ok most of the time. But even “good enough” isn’t infantry simple. The oil wedge in the bearings demands uninterrupted oil flow and high temp viscosity characteristics that doesn’t allow the oil to get squeezed out of the bearing sides too quickly. Oil temp and the state of bearing wear will have a huge affect on how fast oil is squeezed out of the bearings.

What I’d like to find out is if an OP of 15psi at 6k rpms means that a bearing might lose oil faster then the pump could provide it. That would cause the oil wedge to collapse and the loss of bearing material. I say “might” because it would depend on bearing gap (state of wear) and oil absolute visc at that temp.

And if a person wants to go beyond “good enough”, there’s all sorts of things to look into. The attachment is an aussie article that set up a test similar to the SAE 4 ball test. Look how widely the results varied in the oil’s ability to protect the bearings. Crap. I can’t pass any ball test.
