I recently have been having trouble with steering, it turns fine until I get to a certain point then it feels like it’s binding. Once I fight through the tough steering it feels fine again. Fluid level is fine, alignment is fine. Could it be the rack itself?
BTW, this is on my DD, so yeah, it still has PS
The rack, tie rods, control arms, or upper strut bearings are all possibilities. A through inspection by an experienced BMW tech will reveal the most likely candidates.

We have had a number of IE camber plates cause this problem in NorCal, if bad enough it will cause steering bind…
Jack both front tires up and work it through by turning the steering at the wheels, it will help you feel where the problem is…I am betting on bad rack, had that myself and +2 on the IE camber plates causing binding, the stack washers they supply are junk and the upper spring mount will bind on the camber plate.

I had that same problem on the race car but the camber plates were not IE. I had to swap the camber plates out to swap the problem.
