Odd output flange

#1

My car seems to have eaten a relatively new guibo. In the process of replacing it, I noticed this odd output flange on the transmission. If never seen one like this before. Note the odd rubber-coated ring…I’m wondering if this is some sort of vibration damper? The previous owner bent the crap out of it. I assume this was done when the previous guibo was installed.

I’m considering swapping this one with the plain style. Thoughts?

Looks like it could be a very early style tranmission. Some of the linkage pieces above the flange look very different. It should definetly be replaced if its bent but dont toss it. You cant get a new one from bmw without sending in a core. I could use it if you just get one from the junkyard.

Yep, it’s out of an 86 with the old-school metal shift carrier. I’m in the process of converting the carrier and various bits to the newer style. This is a stop-gap until I can save up for one of your rebuilt transmissions. If I’m able to find a new flange, I’ll save this one for ya. I suppose I could just cut the ring off this flange as well.

BTW, I have a transmission out of an 89. It was drivable (shifted through all gears), but had wicked bearing noise. Sadly, part of the tab for the rear transmission mount is also broker off on one side. A little tig welding should fix it. Not sure if it’s still worth a core to ya? If not, I can use it as parts and steal the flange from it.

We can probably still use it as long as you have the tab so it can be welded back on. Keep it in mind and we can see when we are both at the same event.

Remove nut, remove vibration damper and throw it as far as you can, retorque nut. Win…CB

just be sure you follow the tourque sequence for the flange nut or you can kill the trans. just sold one and the guys just hammered it down with an air gun and killed the trans

Thanks for the info guys! Helps a lot.
