This weekend was probably some of the best SE30 racing ever. The top five (not in any order) were this:

  1. Skeen- national champ/ pro driver
  2. Cobetto- two time national champ/ summit pt. lap record
  3. J.Allen- '07 mid atl champ
  4. Skip B.- ferrari challenge/ grand am cup driver/ cheater extraordinaire  :stuck_out_tongue:
  5. Jean Jerrard (or something like that)- rumored imsa champ/ Ferrari challenge driver coach/ “that really fast french guy”

Race 1: No practice. What used to be our shakedown laps had to be our fastest possible laps. As usual the top 5 qualified within less than a second of each other. I was in my usual position alone behind the lead pack but in front of the mid pack. I got swamped at the start but I got back up to where I qualified within about 2 laps. The race was cut short by a red flag when a PTE car found himself on top of a legends car. The cornerworkers are usually fantastic but apparently there was some confusion about what flags to throw. Some stations had FCY, others waving yellow, others nothing at all. Guys werent sure if they should pass or defend or back off. When I arrived at the S/F line for the second time, they had finally decided on red.

Race 2: This might be the race of my year. The first half was uneventful. I got left behind at the start (sound familiar? :S), but I made it back to my quali position on lap 2. I chipped away at the lead pack until FCY came out. The restart came with 2 to go. This was the most exciting stuff I’ve seen all year. Skip gets radio communication (ooooh, ahhhh) before T10 that the green is out, he dives over pit road to pick up a position. Him and Cobetto get tangled, sending chris out into the sand. Of course he stayed WOT ;). On the next lap, Gerard and skeen go side by side in T1, allowing me to go side by side with the French guy into T3. He is amazingly precise. He squeezed me at the entry so that my outside tires were on the white line around the perimeter of the track. We clipped mirrors and I have a small fleck of white paint on my fender, but it was clean and we both drifted through side by side. Its really fun to do that with a guy as skilled as him. On the next lap, the lead SE30 pack split some slow traffic in the chute (very high speed). We all went outside except skeen who went inside… very inside. I was able to stick a nose in on him, but I never really had a chance at overtaking him (drats- last chance :P). Skip was penalized after admitting fault in the incident with cobetto, putting me up to 4th.

This is probably my best video of the season.

Oh yea, and Johnny won both races!
Skeen is the mid atl. Champ!

Off track highlights:

  • Chris Cobetto surprises everyone when he endorses American cars in morning drivers meeting after test driving a Pontiac G8. He later found out that the production run is being cut short. Sorry C :(.
  • Large FFC driver shows off newborn pet monkey wearing paper towel diaper .
  • I get '08 mid.-atl rookie of the year. Thanks to all for making that possible! The SE30 racers of all regions were awesome to race with this year.

This weekend was a fun ending to a great season. Looking forward to an even better one next year!

For those who don’t know, a time trialer named Cale Kastanek was fatally injured on track sunday morning when the brakes on his S2000 apparently failed.
