"Normal" operating conditions

#1

Just got my gauge panel installed and I’m wondering what the “normal” operating ranges are for coolant temperature and oil pressure. As measured in the block, I was running a consistent 185°F. Oil pressure was ~55psi while cruising, dropping to around 20 psi at idle when warm.

Running 50/50 water/coolant for now, and Mobil 1 15W 50.

The oil pressure sounds pretty good. Many cars drop below 20, say 12-18, after a really hard run, but 55 at speed is good.

I don’t have an external water temp gauge, but 185F sounds about right.

My oil pressure is lower at idle then yours. That has been true thru two oil pumps. Your high oil pressure is in the ballpark of mine. Any coolant temp below 225deg won’t get my attention. Gauges are notoriously innacurate tho.

You might want to lose the prop glycol coolant. It is a lousy heat conductor and really slippery if it gets on the track. Unless your garage gets down to -50deg, I wouldn’t bother with >10% prop glycol. As I recall 5% will get you to -10deg, or so. Water Wetter is a better choice. Unlike prop glycol Water Wetter increases the heat xfer properties of water. It does it by reducing water’s surface tension, or something like that.
