Hi all, I went to my first NASA event this morning at Infineon and didn’t see any specE30s - am I missing something? I was under the impression it was a growing class on the west coast. I have a 325is that I’ve been thinking of turning into a spec/KP car so I was interested in how many people were racing in it.
Thanks,
-AJ
norcal specE30?
Well, as you said it’s growing
There are bunch of us building the cars (at various stages). I don’t think anyone is racing in Nor Cal just yet.

AJ - here’s a link to a thread on the status of spec e30 racing on the west coast.
There are a few others as well that you can find by searching or perusing the forums. Several people have cars under construction in NorCal, as Igor mentions. There seems to be a backorder on the H&R springs, which is delaying some of the builds, though. By this fall there should be at least a couple cars on the track, and hopefully by next year there will be a handful out here. I raced under spec e30 last summer, and ran with the miatas, 944’s, honda challenge cars, etc… Though fun, it will be nice to get more e30s on the track. This year I’ve been running with BMW Club Racing (KP) and will likely be running non-BMW events under GTS, so that I can run larger tires & a chip - to help me keep up with other cars. When spec cars start showing up I’ll drop back to conform with the rules.
I take it you must have had the same reaction that most people have to their first event if you’re looking to set up your car for racing already! Let us warn you - it’s a very addictive hobby…many of my friends have told me I’d have been better off picking up a crack habbit instead!!

Hey, thanks guys. I did see that thread and that was one of the reasons I thought I might see some cars and was hoping to meet a few of you face to face. I’m going to keep coming out, doing AX and start HPDE and building my car towards Spec. This is addictive, but one thing that is cool is that I was building another car for several years without a clear goal other than restoring it and at some point it just got to be too "pretty" to race, so I researched and why I picked up an E30 (thought long and hard about a Miata too) - I want to drive :woohoo:
Anyway, thanks for the info - hope to meet you guys out there soon.
Cheers,
-AJ

Steve,
You hit the nail on the head. I’ve been backordered on the springs since March. I had planned on Willow Springs and Driving Concepts Comp school this weekend but the spring delivery really looks like it may be weeks (??) out still. The next Comp. school is in August.
KP and the Ireland "stage 3 race springs" are starting to look pretty good right now, at least for a little while.
I can’t let you have all the fun by yourself.
Chris
Hey,
I will be out there this summer doing HPDE and such. Assuming the springs come in in the time frame they told me today (4-6 weeks), I am shooting to attend the HPDE on June 28th at Thunderhill. I won’t have my car completely built to the rules, but I will have the springs, shocks, swaybars…and whatever else I can scrounge up. It would be awesome to see another e30 out there, either built or not. Peace.
